Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s men host fellow Vanarama National League South side Eastbourne Borough in the Isuzu FA Trophy Third Round Proper, kicking off at 15:00.
Last season for the Sports
It was a tough season for the Sports, finishing 19th in the National League South, six points clear of the drop zone. A poor first half of the season had the club struggling in the relegation zone, which led to Adam Murray replacing Mark Beard as manager. This changed the club’s fortunes around as they avoided going down.
Form guide
The Sports have had a mixed run of recent form, winning twice, drawing once and losing twice in their last five games. After an impressive dismantling of Welling United, winning 4-1 at home, they travelled to mid-table Chippenham Town and suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss.
They replied to that result with a win in their next league match at home to Bath City with a 95thminute winner from George Alexander awarded Eastbourne all three points.
However, since that result, they haven’t won, with a 3-1 away loss to Maidstone United and a goalless draw with Chesham United away at the Meadow.
Last time we met
It was a disappointing loss in Sussex last time the two clubs met. After a win in the Emirates FA Cup for the Wood earlier in the season against, Luke Garrard’s men couldn’t replicate a similar result in the league. After leading the scoring at half-time from a well-taken Eric Sousa penalty in the 40th minute, goals from George Alexander and Finn Ballard-Mcbride awarded the Sports a victory.
One to watch
George Alexander has been the Sports’ talisman this season. Joining from Chelmsford City in the summer, he is second in the 2024/25 Vanarama National League South goalscoring charts with 11 goals in 15 league appearances, including one against the Wood earlier this campaign.
The Wood
We come into this Isuzu FA Trophy Fixture on a run of rich form, winning four out of our last five games in all competitions.
The Wood’s last Isuzu FA Trophy game was a dramatic penalty shootout win against Felixstowe and Walton United. Four matches followed with an away demolishing of Enfield in the Herts Senior Cup and a goalless draw against fellow full-time outfit, Torquay United.
The Wood then went on to win back-to-back away games at Bath City and Chelmsford City respectively. A brace for Kwesi Appiah against the Romans led to a 2-1 win for the Wood and after suffering a two-goal deficit in the first half, we went on to complete the comeback resulting in a 3-2 win against the Clarets.
