Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side face an in-form Forest Green Rovers outfit in the play-off eliminator with a trip to Carlisle United in the offing for the winner, with kick-off at 19:45.
Forest Green nearly made an immediate return to Sky Bet League Two last term after finishing in third place. However, they fell short in the play-offs after a penalty shootout defeat to finalists Southend United which resulted in the departure of Steve Cotterill.
A key figure in Forest Green’s rise up the leagues in recent campaigns, Christian Doidge is looking to guide their return back into the Football League. Having netted 59 goals in 108 appearances in all competitions at The New Lawn, the 33-year-old Welshman ended his three-year spell with stints at Bolton Wanderers as well as Hibernian and Kilmarnock before returning to Gloucestershire last year.
We ended our regular season with a 1-0 victory over Sutton United as Leon Ayinde netted his second goal for the club with a superb strike with 28 minutes on the clock. That three points ensured we reached the 90-point mark and secured a joint-record fourth-place finish, ending the campaign in fine form with only one defeat in eight games.
We have already met on two occasions in the league this term with the first clash seeing Robbie Savage’s side secure a 2-1 win in October. Jili Buyabu opened the scoring with a composed strike on 34 minutes before Matt Rush drew level with a fine strike from the edge of the box with 65 minutes on the clock. However, Harvey Bunker restored their one-goal cushion ten minutes later to seal the points.
They made the trip to Hertfordshire in February and the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw as Kyle McAllister cancelled out Lewis Richardson’s header. Joshua Osude was dismissed seven minutes from time but the Wood were unable to find a late winner.
