Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side embark on one of the furthest away trips of the Enterprise National League season as we head to Cumbria to lock horns with Carlisle United, kicking off at 15:00.
The Blues had a disappointing campaign last term as they suffered relegation from Sky Bet League Two, now playing in the fifth tier for the first time since the 2004/05 season.
Under the leadership of ex-Stoke City and Southampton boss Mark Hughes, Carlisle went on a three-game winning run towards the end of the season but one point from a possible nine in their final three matches confirmed their second successive relegation.
Our last competitive clash with the Cumbrian outfit came back in 2013 when they made the trip to the Meadow Park in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup.
The match ended in a goalless draw which prompted a replay away from home. Luke Garrard gave the Wood a surprise lead from the spot with 29 minutes on the clock but late goals from Mark Beck and Lee Miller ensured Carlisle ran out as 2-1 victors.
Joining from Altrincham in the summer for an undisclosed fee, prolific striker Regan Linney will be looking to lead Carlisle’s promotion charge back to the Football League this season. In his two-and-a-half seasons with the Robins, the 28-year-old asserted himself as a fan favourite. Linney netted on 25 occasions last season.
Our third outing within the space of a week, Luke Garrard’s side will be hoping to get off the mark with our first three points of the league season tomorrow.
We kicked off our National League return on Saturday with the visit of Rochdale. Unfortunately, two goals from experienced frontman Emmanuel Dieseruvwe within the space of three second-half minutes sealed the Dale a 2-0 win.
Nonetheless, Wood made a promising start to the National League Cup campaign on Tuesday night with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest U21’s thanks to strikes from Charles Clayden and Matt Rush.
