Boreham Wood’s under 18s reached the final of the Brian Hitchings Challenge Cup, with a penalty shoot-out win over Hoddesdon Town.

The tie was scoreless after 90 minutes, but a Fred Burbidge save and a Sam Walsh penalty secured their place in the final.

It was a tie of few chances, and an early Cheyce Grant free-kick was driven straight into the wall.

Sam Walsh stretched the opposition left-back and flashed a ball across the box, but the Hoddesdon ‘keeper was off his line to claim.

A looped cross from Grant on the left-flank was narrowly missed by the outstretched leg of Dan Creese, who had made a late run to the far post.

Ejike Akubude had been brought on in an attempt to stretch the opposition backline with his pace and it looked effective as he met Iliman Ndiaye’s through ball, but the home defence recovered to clear.

The visitor’s best chance fell to skipper Jack Gibbs from close-range, but he could only aim his effort over the bar.

Alex Morgan, Ndiaye, Grant, Tarrel Watson-Noel and Walsh all scored their penalties in a tense shoot-out, to secure the win, with Fred Burbidge saving two attempts.
