The Shay, Vanarama National League

On Saturday, Boreham Wood make the lengthy trip to National League leaders FC Halifax Town. Both sides come into the game failing to secure victory’s in their respective games on Tuesday night.

Boreham Wood faced an in-form Barrow side and the win for the home side was their 7th on the bounce in the Vanarama National League, whereas Halifax Town drew to 23rd place Chorley, a game which the away side were likely expected to win.

THE CONTEXT

Boreham Wood were on the end of a 3-1 defeat on Tuesday night against an impressive Barrow side, where Scott Quigley’s brace saw him go top of the goal scoring charts not only in the Vanarama National League, but across England’s top give divisions.

Tyrone Marsh managed to claw one goal back after Barrow scored two early goals and from then on Luke Garrard’s men dug deep, creating many goal scoring chances but failed to convert. Barrow grabbed another goal late to secure all three points with a 3-1 victory.

Even though it was a disappointing 0-0 draw for FC Halifax Town away to Chorley on Tuesday night, the point was enough for them to maintain top place in the National League.

FC HALIFAX TOWN RECENT FORM

Halifax Town currently sit top of the table of the Vanarama National league having won three of their last five league games.

Town’s strong defence has been their key to success this season having conceded just 14 goals so far, the lowest goals conceded tally in the entire division.

Pete Wild said in an interview after the Chorley game, “We had 90% possession, it was a frustrating night for us as we dominated the game throughout, but we know what teams will do, sit back and try to catch us on the break.”

FC HALIFAX TOWN’S PLAYER TO WATCH

Nathan Clarke, Defender

Nathan Clarke has been a great servant for the Shaymen this season featuring in every minute of every game so far.

The 35-year old’s valuable experience has been pivotal to FC Halifax’s success at the back having the best defensive record in the whole National League conceding just 14 goals.

Furthermore, the defender has proved a threat in the air from set pieces having chipped in with two important goals for the Shaymen so far in this campaign.

LAST TIME WE MET

FC Halifax Town 1-1 Boreham Wood (Tuesday 18th December 2018, National League)

The draw for Boreham Wood saw us miss out on the chance to go within five points of the play-offs, whereas Halifax moved six points clear of the relegation zone.

Justin Shaibu’s early header saw the Wood go 1-0 up, and despite early dominating the game,FC Halifax Town’s striker Southwell managed to level the game for the hosts on the stroke of half-time in the 43rd minute.

A second half stalemate would mean the Wood would travel home to Hertfordshire with a point, despite probably edging the encounter overall.

IN FOCUS: TYRONE MARSH

Striker Tyrone Marsh has managed to net four times in his last five appearances for the Wood in and is our player ‘in focus’ in this week’s match preview.

The man in-form has scored eight goals overall in the Vanarama National League and sits joint 4th in the overall goal scoring standings.

The relationship between Marsh and strike partner Kabongo Tshimanga has been crucial for the Wood in this season as the pair have scored 18 times in 16 games, seeing their goal scoring form lead to many victory’s.

The last time Marsh played in the National League was with Macclesfield Town when they won the league during the 2017/18 campaign, of which Tyrone has already equalled his goal scoring tally from that season. Long may his goal scoring form continue, as well as his blossoming relationship with front man partner Kabongo Tshimanga.
