Boreham Wood FC’s Manager Luke Garrard and select players this afternoon visited the ‘Unity’ mural at the site of the Balmoral Drive fire in Borehamwood, a major building fire that has left 21 households without their homes and possessions. The mural has been described as a ‘Beacon of Hope’ by those affected.
Pupils at nearby Saffron Green Primary School wanted to know how they could help and submitted drawings and messages of hope and solidarity with the survivors, which became a 50-feet long unity mural.
Over 100 school children took part and six winning designs have been spray-painted onto the hoarding outside the flats by a local artist, Lee Bennion, as the building undergoes reparation work. One design was inspired by Boreham Wood FC, and shows the Club logo with the words “ONE TEAM, ONE COMMUNITY.”

Gaffer Luke Garrard said this on today’s visit, “My heart goes out to those who lost their homes and possessions to the fire, I cannot begin to imagine how hard this period has been for them.
“I’m a real believer that events like this can bring communities closer and that is true here. The compassion shown by Saffron Green students is incredible to see and it was an absolute pleasure to visit the mural today and meet the winners.
“The messaging on the mural was touching to see, and it is an honour that our Club and logo is included. It goes to show how deeply connected our Club is becoming within our local community from what we are doing. The mural hits the nail on the head, we are one team and one community, both on and off the pitch.”
