Croydon Athletic 1 – 4 Boreham Wood
National Conference Youth Cup First Round
Wednesday 15th December 2011- Kick off 1.30pm

Yesterday, Wednesday 15th December 2011, Boreham Wood’s Under 19’s travelled to South London to play Croydon Athletic in the First Round of the Conference Youth Cup. As well as playing against a poor pitch and a swirling wind, ‘Wood’ returned to Hertfordshire with a hard fought win.

Croydon, who currently sit 8th in their division with 10 points, had previously played 7 league games – winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 3, scoring 17 and conceding 17 in the process, so it was going to be no easy game.

‘Wood’, who always looked to be in control of the game, took the lead just before half time with a goal from Robert Hastings, and they took that lead into the interval.

After half time, ‘Wood’ started brightly and quickly put the game out of sight with early second half goals from Harvey Scott-Morris and Steve O’Connor.

There was a slight wobble when Croydon clawed a goal back after sloppy play across ‘Wood’s’ back four allowed the Croydon striker in to make it 3-1. However a late attack from ‘Wood’ resulted in Paul Otim being taken down inside the box and a penalty was awarded. ‘Wood’ skipper Charlie Hunter stepped and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner to restore the 3 goal advantage. ‘Wood’ also had a Matt Roles goal disallowed when striker Dean Rubinia was deemed to have committed a foul on a Croydon defender in the build up.

Head Academy Coach Luke Garrard said ‘On a bad pitch and strong wind, our boy’s acquitted themselves very well and got the result. However the team has a lot more to give, and with a few crucial players coming back into the team, the best is still to come!”
