RESERVES HAVE TITLE IN SIGHT

‘Wood’s’ Reserves enjoyed a hugely successful afternoon in pursuit of the Suburban Reserve League title. The top of the League is extremely tight with 3 teams; ‘Wood’, Welling United and Royston Town all level on 34 points but with ‘Wood’ having a vital game in hand on their 2 rivals to take advantage. Met Police are currently in 4th place on 29 points with 3 games in hand, so the title really is a 4 horse race going into the final few furlongs.

On Saturday ‘Wood’ ran out 6-1 winners over a Corinthian side who sit 3rd from bottom and not yet safe from the drop. A patient, possession based first half performance controlled from start to finish by ‘Wood’ was rewarded with fantastic team goal ending with a calm Kyle Roberts finish. Numerous chances were squandered and ‘Wood’ took their 1-0 advantage into the break.

After a sloppy start to the 2nd half ‘Wood’ allowed Corinthians back into the game, gifting them a goal against the run of play to level the score at 1-1. However this only sparked ‘Wood’ back into action and 5 unanswered goals from Kyle Roberts, Frank Keita. Patrick Sequira, Alfie Barker and Sorba Thomas saw ‘Wood’ run out eventual 6-1 winners. This was another ruthless performance infront of goal for the young ‘Wood’ side which now sees them as the leagues highest goal scorers with 59 goals from 17 games.

The Reserves now have ‘make or break’ week ahead with away fixtures against Metropolitan Police (Wednesday 20th April, 7.30pm K/O) and Tonbridge Angels (Saturday 23nd April, 3pm K/O) as they look to secure their first ever Suburban Reserve League title.

Reserve Manager Cameron Mawer said “The boys have put themselves into a fantastic position in the League and now we are going to see what they made of, whether they can finish the job off or not… We take on Met Police home and away, and Tonbridge Angels away in our final 3 games, so it is not an easy run in. But I’ve challenged the boys mental strength to see if they can hold their nerve in this pressurised situation to continue to push on a win the title.”
