Match preview: Weston-super-Mare (H)

7 February 2025

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s men host play-off hopefuls Weston-super-Mare in the Vanarama National League South, kicking off at 15:00.

Last Season for the Seagulls

The Somerset-based side settled for a mid-table finish in their first season back in the Vanarama National League South after gaining promotion the season before. The Seagulls finished the campaign in 13th place with a tally of 59 points from 46 games.

Form Guide

Weston-super-Mare are on a decent run of form currently, losing only once in their previous five matches. They began this run with a goalless draw at home against a struggling St Albans side and an impressive 3-1 win against promotion hopefuls Dorking Wanderers. Goals from Luke Coulson and Pedro Borges put the Seagulls ahead going into additional time. The Wanderers got a goal back through Rhys Murphy; however, Sam Pearson scored a third for the visitors to take the three points back to Somerset.

The Seagulls could not replicate their previous result, however, as they lost 4-1 at home to Welling United. Although the hosts went ahead in the second minute through Dylan Kadji, goals from Dav Winfield, Finn Ballard-McBride, Jayden Davis, and Zain Walker earned the Wings an important three points in their attempt to avoid relegation.

Tomorrow’s opponents bounced back after a disappointing defeat with a win away at Arbour Park against Slough Town. The Seagulls were ahead at half-time thanks to a 42nd-minute penalty from Luke Coulson. The Rebels equalised through Slavi Spasov, but the away side ran away with the scoreline after goals from Emlyn Lewis and Morgan Lewis. The Seagulls’ most recent result was a 1-1 draw against Hemel Hempstead. The Tudors went ahead early in the second half with a Kai Brosnan goal, but the travelling side cancelled it out with a Luke Coulson penalty in the 67th minute.

Last Time We Met

It was a goalless draw in the reverse fixture between the two sides. The Wood struggled in a scrappy first half, with Weston nearly taking the lead through a Reuben Reid chance. The second half saw improved play from Luke Garrard’s side, with a Tom Whelan free kick saved by Max Harris. Late pressure saw Jayden Richardson unable to control a cross from Erico Sousa, and despite several chances, the match ended goalless.

One to Watch

One for the Wood to look out for will be Luke Coulson. After joining the Seagulls in the summer of 2024 from relegated Dartford, the winger has put up impressive numbers so far this season, with 15 goals and 12 assists in all competitions and will be looking to add to that tally tomorrow afternoon.

The Wood

Luke Garrard’s men earned their first win in three games after defeating Hemel Hempstead Town on Monday evening. The Wood had been on a strong run of form before the previous four games, having not lost since November in the Vanarama National League South. However, three losses on the bounce against Chippenham, Worthing, and Aldershot stopped this run in its tracks.

Nonetheless, the Wood are looking to build up a new winning run after Monday’s entertaining 4-3 away win against Hemel Hempstead. We took an early lead through Femi Ilesanmi, which was short-lived after Brandon Barzey equalised in the 15th minute. Talisman Kwesi Appiah put us back ahead 12 minutes later, and Tom Whelan extended the lead just before half-time. The Tudors brought the scores back level through Oli Lynch and Brandon Barzey, but they could not hang on, as in the 87th minute, Matt Rush tapped home a winner to earn the Wood the three points.
