Match preview: St Albans City (H)

9 December 2024

Tomorrow, the Wood are back in Vanarama National League South action at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium Meadow Park against local rivals St Albans City, kicking off at 19:45.

Last season for the Saints

It was a midtable finish for St Albans City last season where in the latter stages, they were on track to finish in a play-off position. Considering the standards the Saints had set for themselves, finishing in the play-off places the season prior, they may have felt disappointed not clinching a top seven finish.

Form guide

The Saints have struggled in recent times, only winning one game in their last five. In that time, they have also played out one draw and have suffered three losses.

In the Isuzu FA Trophy Second Round Proper, they suffered a disappointing loss to lower league opposition in Basford United. They then replied with a win in the Herts Senior Cup away to Bishop’s Stortford, winning 2-1.

However, they haven’t won in their last three league matches, losing 2-0 at home to Chippenham Town and 6-3 to Aveley away from home. Their last match was a positive result away at full-time outfit Maidstone United, where they drew 1-1.

Last time we met

The last meeting between the two sides came in an Emirates FA Cup Second Round Proper fixture in December 2021. In front of a record attendance of 4,101, the Wood demolished the Saints 4-0 in a decisive win, setting up a tie against EFL side, AFC Wimbledon.

Luke Garrard’s men went into half time a goal ahead courtesy of Josh Rees, setting up an impressive second half showing. Rees scored his second of the game four minutes after the restart, which was later accompanied by goals from Gus Mafuta and Adrian Clifton, sending the Wood through to the Third Round.

One to watch

Shaun Jeffers has been the Saints’ star man since he joined the club in July of 2020. The striker, who spent the 2017/18 season at the Wood, is the record scorer in the Vanarama National League South with 129 goals, scoring 92 of those goals for the Saints.

The Wood

Luke Garrard’s men have been in a rich vein of form recently, winning four of their last five games. A 5-1 away win over Enfield in the Herts Senior Cup was followed by a goalless home draw in the league against fellow full-time outfit, Torquay United. Back-to-back away wins followed, starting with a Kwesi Appiah brace securing all three points at Bath City.

Then, after finding ourselves two goals down after 45 minutes at Chelmsford City, we came back to secure victory with goals from Jayden Richardson and Lee Ndlovu. Kwesi Appiah was once again on the scoresheet in our last game, a 1-0 victory at home to Eastbourne Borough in the Isuzu FA Trophy.
