Match preview: Newport County (H)

6 December 2025

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side lock horns with Sky Bet League Two outfit Newport County in the second round proper of the Emirates FA Cup, kicking-off at 14:30.

Last season for the Exiles

While they currently occupy the bottom place of the fourth tier, Newport managed to avoid dropping into the National League with a 22nd-place finish last term. Morecambe and Carlisle United were the teams to face relegation, finishing seven points ahead of the latter in the final relegation slot.

One to watch

An experienced defender with a plethora of Football League experience, Liam Shepard will be looking to play a key role in guiding the Exiles to League Two safety. Arriving at the County Ground in the summer after a four-year spell at Salford City, the 31-year-old right-back also has Peterborough United, Forest Green Rovers and Yeovil Town on his CV.

The Wood

It was a dominant showing last time out as we progressed to the knockout stages of the National League Cup as we ran out as 4-0 victors over Wolves U21. Luke Norris broke the deadlock within the first minute before further goals from Lewis Richardson, Jon Benton and Regan Booty ensured we made it two home wins in four days following our league truimph over FC Halifax Town.

We progressed to the second round at the start of November thanks to a convincing 3-0 win over Crawley Town with strikes from Matt Rush, Zak Brunt and Abdul Abdulmalik ensuring we caused an upset in WD6.
