Match preview: Hornchurch (A)

10 February 2025

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s men travel east to face Hornchurch in the Vanarama National League South, kicking off at 19:45.

Last Season for the Urchins

Hornchurch enjoyed a memorable season as they won the Isthmian League Premier Division with an impressive tally of 100 points, earning promotion to the Vanarama National League South. In their centurion season, the Urchins recorded 31 wins, seven losses, and only four draws.

Form Guide

The Urchins have had a mixed run of form; however, they are unbeaten in their last three matches. The East London side endured back-to-back losses, firstly away at Chelmsford and then at home to current league leaders Dorking Wanderers.

Daryl McMahon’s men ended their losing streak with a 1-1 draw at home to Salisbury, despite going down to ten men after defender Ryan Scott was sent off in the 28th minute. Another home draw against Tonbridge Angels followed, before securing their first win in nine league games with a 2-0 victory away at Bath City. A brace from Darren McQueen saw the Urchins return to East London with three points. Tomorrow’s hosts will be aiming for back-to-back league wins for the first time since November.

Last Time We Met

Boreham Wood dominated the first half but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against a resilient Hornchurch. Kwesi Appiah’s seventh goal in eight games gave Wood a deserved lead, with Abdul Abdulmalik and Tom Whelan going close. Hornchurch goalkeeper Mason Terry made key saves, denying Appiah and Sousa.

Hornchurch responded after the break, equalising in the 59th minute through Thomas Wraight’s stunning 40-yard lob. Boreham Wood pushed for a winner, with Appiah and Dixon going close, but Terry stood firm. In stoppage time, Cameron Coxe saw red for a last-man foul, ensuring the spoils were shared.

One to Watch

Urchins’ shot-stopper Mason Terry will be one for Wood to watch out for. Terry has impressed between the sticks for Hornchurch since joining on loan from West Ham United this summer, having kept eight clean sheets in the Vanarama National League South this season.

The Wood

Wood will be looking to return to winning ways tomorrow evening after a narrow defeat in their previous game at home to Weston-super-Mare. Luke Garrard’s men had been on an impressive eleven-match unbeaten run in the league, stretching from November into the New Year. However, four defeats in Wood’s last five matches across all competitions have led to a drop in league position and an exit from the Isuzu FA Trophy.

Their last match ended in a home defeat to play-off hopefuls Weston-super-Mare. The Seagulls took the lead in the 31st minute through Ollie Chamberlain’s strike, and although Wood applied plenty of attacking pressure, especially in the closing moments, they were unable to find an equaliser and had to settle for defeat.
