Tonight, Luke Garrard’s side host Braintree Town in the Enterprise National League in our fourth outing in the past 12 days, kicking off at 19:45.
After securing promotion from the National League South via the play-offs in the 2023/24 campaign, Braintree struggled to adapt to their new surroundings under Angelo Harrop at the start of last term which resulted in his departure in November 2024.
However, under Steve Pitt, the Essex-based outfit avoided the drop by four points after an excellent run of results since his appointment.
The last competitive clashes came in the 2018/19 campaign, the last time we were both occupants of the National League at the same time.
The first meeting came at the start of that season where the points were shared in a 1-1 draw, Jamal Fyfield’s opener was cancelled out by Mohamed Bettamer. A share of the spoils came once again in the reverse fixture at Cressing Road with Lyle Della-Verde taking the lead for the Iron before Justin Shaibu’s leveller.
The summer signing tasked with replacing Kyrell Lisbie’s eye for goal, Lewis Walker netted a brace in their 3-0 opening day victory over FC Halifax Town. Putting pen to paper on a deal for this season from Woking, the 26-year-old could play a key role in the Iron’s pursuit of survival.
A pulsating 3-3 draw at Carlisle United last time out demonstrated Garrard’s side’s character in abundance. Although Luke Norris gave the Wood a first-half lead, the recently relegated Cumbrians fought back thanks to a Regan Linney brace and Georgie Kelly’s strike. However, Charlie O’Connell delivered the goods six minutes from time with the equaliser.
This followed our opening day defeat at home to Rochdale where we will be looking to pick up our first three points of the campaign tonight.
