Match preview: Carlisle United (H)

20 December 2025

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side return to Enterprise National League action for the first time in nearly a month with the visit of fellow promotion hopefuls Carlisle United, kicking-off at 16:00.

Last season for the Cumbrians

The Blues had a disappointing campaign last term as they suffered relegation from Sky Bet League Two, now playing in the fifth tier for the first time since the 2004/05 season.

Under the leadership of ex-Stoke City and Southampton boss Mark Hughes, Carlisle went on a three-game winning run towards the end of the season but one point from a possible nine in their final three matches confirmed their second successive relegation.

One to watch

Joining from Altrincham in the summer for an undisclosed fee, prolific striker Regan Linney has been a pivotal part of Carlisle’s early season success after netting 12 goals in 22 league matches. The 28-year-old has made a name for himself in Cumbria following prolific spells with Alty as well as FC United of Manchester.

The Wood

It was an afternoon to forget last time out in WD6 as we bowed out of the Isuzu FA Trophy to Brackley Town in the Third Round following a 3-1 penalty shootout defeat. Our last league clash came back in the middle of November with an emphatic 3-0 victory at Gateshead courtsey of two goals from Zak Brunt and a Regan Booty debut wonder strike.

Previous meetings

The spoils were shared in a 3-3 draw in our second National League encounter of the season as we made the long trip up to Brunton Park.

Georgie Kelly cancelled out Luke Norris’ opener before Linney got on the scoresheet with 53 minutes on the clock to take the lead before the lethal forward added their third 18 minutes later. Nonetheless, the Wood staged a late fightback with Norris netting his brace 11 minutes from time before Charlie O’Connell grabbed the equaliser.
