WOOD SUCCUMB TO DEFEAT AT SUTTON

Sutton United 2-0 Boreham Wood
Saturday 13th February 2021, 3.00pm
Gander Green Lane, Vanarama National League

A goal in each half from Louis John and Will Randall gave high flying Sutton United a well-deserved 2-0 win against Boreham Wood at Gander Green Lane. Wood were unchanged from last Saturday’s victory at Maidenhead United and would have been confident of extending their nine match unbeaten away record in the Vanarama National League but it just wasn’t to be.

In an uneventful first half, the home side were dominant they threatened early on with a couple of corners with Isaac Olaofe heading wide of Nathan Ashmore’s goal after five minutes of play. The usual threat of Tshimanga and Marsh upfront were sniffed out by the excellent United defence and Sutton took a lead after thirty-two minutes when Louis John finished well from a Rob Milsom corner. It was the big centre half’s first goal in four years! Olaofe headed wide again for the hosts just before the interval.

On forty-nine minutes Sutton doubled their lead and what a goal it was. Will Randall picked the ball up in his own half and ran at the Wood defence before unleashing a shot from the edge of the penalty area that gave Ashmore no chance. Luke Garrard shuffled his pack soon afterwards when he replaced Junior Morias with Matt Rhead.

It was the fresh on the pitch forward who had Wood’s next chance at sixty-one minutes. His header was well saved by Dean Bouzanis in the Sutton goal, Kabs Tshimanga then had a couple of chances but was also denied. After seventy-five minutes Tyrone Marsh struck a curling shot just wide of the Sutton goal, the home side held on comfortable in the end to secure the three points.

A disappointing day at the office for Boreham Wood against, to be fair, a very good Sutton United team. The visitors seemed as though they just didn’t quite get going. Sutton United will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season and a competitor to watch out for this season…
