GOOD POINT AT THE SPIREITES

Chesterfield 0-0 Boreham Wood
Tuesday 13th April 2021, 7.45pm
Technique Stadium, Vanarama National League

Following a very good defensive display, Boreham Wood got a good point at in-form Chesterfield in a match where the Wood got better as the contest went on.

Boreham Wood were unchanged from Saturday’s victory against Wealdstone, but it was the Spireites who had the better of the first half. On six minutes, it was their new signing Kairo Mitchell who had their first chance but headed over Ashmore’s goal when well placed, this was followed shortly by Gavin Gunning’s free-kick which also went wide. On twenty minutes, the home side had another chance when Akwasi Asante’s header was well saved by Ashmore. On thirty-three minutes, the Wood had a chance when Tom Champion headed wide from a corner and a minute later Kabs Tshimanga was denied by former Wood keeper Grant Smith in the Chesterfield goal. Curtis Weston’s long-range effort for the hosts was well saved by Ashmore before Asante then struck the rebound over the bar when it seemed easier to score.

Most of the second half was uneventful and very much stop-start. Asante was denied on sixty-four minutes following an excellent challenge from Mark Ricketts and just seven minutes later veteran striker Nathan Tyson shot wide when well place for the Spireites.

The last ten minutes was all Boreham Wood. It was Corey Whitely who put the ball in the net straight from a corner but the referee immediately ruled the goal out due to a foul by Tshimanga on Smith in the Chesterfield goal when it looked very much like the former Wood keeper was just rooted to his spot. A minute later, Tyrone Marsh stung the hands of Smith with a well struck shot and or the final few minutes, Wood got a succession of corners but were unable to breakthrough.

It was an excellent defensive display from the Wood against one of the league’s most in-form sides.
