Wood Hope To Play Their Cards Right!

by John Mead.

The high flying Cards arrive at Meadow Park this Saturday in the first of two Bank Holiday weekend fixtures.

Their start to the season has been formidable, stringing four straight wins together after an opening day defeat at the hands of Tranmere Rovers. They are carrying on where they left off last season, their seventh placed finish left them agonisingly just three points shy of a play off place.

Ian Allinson has the opportunity to shuffle his deck hoping to make hearts flutter against the Leagues second place side. Of course we are no strangers to tough opposition, having faced four of the top six sides already this season!

Billy Clifford will be available after suspension, whilst strikers Junior Morias and Charlie MacDonald are both approaching full match fitness. The loss of Jamie Lucas to a hamstring was a blow last Saturday against Tranmere Rovers, yet his replacement Harry Crawford performed admirably notching his second of the campaign.

The Cards suffered a similar loss up at Prenton Park, losing the services of striker Scott Rendell for the season, but were quick to strengthen with the signing of Dan Holman on loan from Colchester United. It looks like a good piece of business with the striker all over Chester City in their latest victory scoring one of their five goals on the afternoon. It was Holman’s second in three games that accomplished a 5-2 win last Saturday. Further wins against Bromley, Altrincham and Torquay United complete their twelve point haul from five games

Other recent signings include defender Ismael Yakabu a Barnet legend with 260 appearances for The Bees, who joined at the start of the season from Newport County.

One player that our own Scott Doe and Luke Howell will know well is another defender Brian Saah, who signed from The Daggers after a successful loan spell in the latter half of last season.

In a similar vein to Gateshead , Woking are a relatively settled side who have played together for some time. Striker Guiseppe Sole epitomises that continuity having started his career at the Woking Academy and aside for a short spell at Havant and Waterlooville and some loan spells has played his whole career at The Kingfield Stadium. He is approaching 200 games for the club, one of those being our last encounter, a 2-1 defeat in last seasons F A Cup 4th Qualifying Round, when his two goals spelled the end of our interest in the Competition, in a closely fought game.

We have met seven times in the last decade and we are still waiting to taste victory. That may all change this Saturday and we hope as many Wood Fans old and new can turn out to make it an afternoon to remember.

The following Monday we travel to Dover Athletic for an afternoon fixture, with the Club running mini buses for our supporters to the game.

Boreham Wood v Woking .

Saturday August 29th, kick off 3pm.
