Match preview: Southend United (A)

23 February 2026

Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s side make the trip to South-East Essex to lock horns with an in-form Southend United outfit also eyeing a spot in the Football League next term, kicking-off at 19:45.

Last season for the Shrimpers

It was nearly a season to remember for Kevin Maher’s outfit last term as they came minutes away from sealing a return to the EFL for the first time since 2021.

Following a late season surge into the play-offs, Southend fell to a 3-2 defeat to Oldham Athletic in the play-off final after two dramatic victories over Rochdale and Forest Green Rovers en route.

One to watch

A well-known striker at this level – after successful spells with Solihull Moors and Chesterfield – Andrew Dallas is back in the Enterprise National League as he looks to spearhead Southend’s promotion charge. The 26-year-old Scotsman signed on loan from Barnsley in the summer and has netted 10 goals so far this season.

The Wood

It was honours even last time out in the Enterprise National League as Forest Green Rovers visited Hertfordshire and a 1-1 draw ensued. Following a feisty first-half, Lewis Richardson broke the deadlock with a looping header from Zak Brunt’s pinpoint cross seven minutes into the second 45 before Kyle McAllister drew level from the spot on 65 minutes. Josh Osude’s red card with seven minutes of regulation time remaining saw a late Wood surge, but we were unable to grab a last-gasp winner.

Previous meetings

The reverse fixture came back at the end of September as the spoils were shared in a closely-fought 1-1 draw. Matt Rush opened the scoring with a composed finish on 69, but the Wood were unable to hold onto that lead as Josh Walker equalised for the visitors nine minutes from time.
