GARRARD: “IT’S A DIFFERENT ERA NOW”

29 June 2017

Following a very successful return to training on Wednesday, Luke Garrard was quick to praise the togetherness of his new look squad, highlight how important it was to get recruitment right this summer.

With five summer signing already through the door at Meadow Park, pre-season will be vital for Garrard and his team as they look to make an early impact on the National League.

“It was very positive, I felt that the boys looked strong,” Garrard stated following the first session back. “It’s a different era now, they all come back fit and that allows us to get the balls out earlier than we would have previously, so I am very happy.

“I thought that our skipper Mark Ricketts came back strong, Tom Champion and Paul Benson both looked strong, Keiran Murtagh, Dean Wells and some of the youngsters came back very strong too.

“It was impressive and overall, I am very, very happy with how they returned.”

Garrard and his men head down south for a pre-season training camp next week and the 31-year-old shed some light on what the players can expect during the time away.

“We leave here on Monday for Devon, we are there for six nights and I think that it is going to be a massive opportunity for us to bed them in early doors.

“We will be doing double sessions every day and the facilities down at the hotel are phenomenal, so I think that it is going to be a very worthwhile exercise and it will allow us to get the togetherness there within the first two weeks.”

As well as five new players, the manager was also working alongside the club’s new assistant manager Terry Harris for the first time and lauded his right-hand man for the instant impact that he had.

“We had a staff meeting with the players this morning, and we were just going through Terry’s background and it highlights exactly what he is as a man and just how much he has achieved at this level.

“It is going to very positive, he brings with him a wealth of understanding, a knowledge of the players, and yeah, the first impressions of him are very, very good.”
