Boreham Wood made it to the Isuzu FA Trophy Fifth Round thanks to two superb second-half goals from Matt Rush and Jon Benton, before a late Andy Robinson strike for Weymouth ensured a nervy final couple of minutes.
Luke Garrard made five changes to the starting line-up from New Year’s Day’s win against Slough Town, with David Agbontohoma replacing Josh Hare at the back, and Mo Sagaf, Gus Mafuta, and Abdul Abdulmalik coming in for Jack Payne, Tom Whelan, and Jon Benton in midfield. Matt Rush started ahead of Kwesi Appiah up front.
Wood controlled much of the early play, with Charles Clayden heavily involved in their initial pressure. On eight minutes, he fired wide after being played in by Lee Ndlovu. On 17 minutes, a Matt Rush cross was fired over by Ndlovu. A minute later, a Clayden cross was volleyed towards goal by Jayden Richardson, but he was denied by Terras keeper Will Buse.
On 34 minutes, a neat combination between Clayden and Abdulmalik ended with Clayden firing just over the bar. The hosts had their first chance two minutes later when a Leon Hamblin cross was volleyed straight at Nathan Ashmore by Brooklyn Genesini. The hosts improved as the half progressed and created two good chances just before the break, with Robinson and Ben Greenwood being denied by Ashmore in stoppage time.
HT: Weymouth 0–0 Boreham Wood
The second half started evenly, with the hosts matching Boreham Wood’s efforts. Five minutes after the restart, Chris Bush played in Richardson, but his shot was off target. Shortly afterwards, an excellent Gus Mafuta cross picked out Rush, but he couldn’t direct his header properly. The Terras responded when Christie Ward forced Ashmore into a good save on 58 minutes. A minute later, Jaiden Bartolo fired a free kick just wide.
On 61 minutes, Wood took the lead with a stunning strike. Matt Rush picked his spot from 25 yards out and finished emphatically into the corner of Buse’s goal. With six minutes of normal time remaining, Benton doubled the lead with his first goal for the club. His powerful strike dipped at the last moment to deceive Buse, having narrowly missed a similar effort against Slough on Saturday when it struck the crossbar. In the first minute of stoppage time, Andy Robinson pulled one back for the hosts, but it was too late to change the outcome.
FT: Weymouth 1–2 Boreham Wood
This is the first time Boreham Wood have reached the Fifth Round of the FA Trophy in eight seasons. With other clubs seemingly taking the competition lightly, Luke Garrard clearly believes his squad is capable of making a strong FA Trophy run alongside their promotion quest. Wood will eagerly await the Fifth Round Proper draw on Monday and return to league action against Hampton & Richmond Borough next Saturday.
