Boreham Wood secured their eleventh win in thirteen league games this season with two second-half goals to claim all three points in Surrey against Sutton United.

Luke Garrard made one change to his starting line-up from last Saturday’s win against Altrincham, with Regan Booty available again and replacing Marley Marshall-Miranda in midfield.

The hosts controlled the game in the early stages and nearly took the lead after two minutes when Brandon Njoku pressured Ted Curd into an error in his own penalty area. However, the Chelsea loanee somehow managed to scramble back and keep the ball from crossing the line. Soon afterwards, Emmanuel Osadebe fired just wide for Sutton. In the opening period, the hosts also forced a succession of corners that came to nothing.

Wood then began to create chances of their own, with Lewis Richardson going close twice in the 18th and 21st minutes. His first shot flew just wide before goalkeeper Spike Brits did well to save his second effort.

On the half-hour mark, Zak Brunt went close but was denied by an excellent block from Bobby Amartey. Soon afterwards, Omar Mussa forced Curd into a really good save. In the 38th minute, Chris Bush headed Brunt’s free-kick over the bar before Brunt’s shot was blocked by Osadebe. Wood began to show more quality as the half progressed towards the break.

Wood enjoyed plenty of possession after the interval and began to find their rhythm. Bush confirmed this by scoring the opening goal in the 62nd minute when he headed Brunt’s corner home at the far post. There was some doubt over whether the ball had crossed the line, but after a glance at his assistant referee, Matthew Russell awarded the goal. Having gone over a year without scoring, Bush had now found the net in consecutive matches.

Six minutes later, Ben Whitfield volleyed towards goal and Jay Bird managed to get a head on the ball, forcing Brits into a good save.

In the 72nd minute, Jermaine Francis was denied by Tylor Golden, who did well to block his shot. Eight minutes later, Wood made sure of the points with a second goal. A lovely reverse pass from Brunt picked out substitute Danny Cashman, who, like Bush, scored in consecutive matches.

The second goal knocked the stuffing out of Sutton United and, apart from a Will Nightingale effort that went high and wide, the hosts showed little sign of mounting a comeback. Regan Booty went close to adding a third later on, but his free-kick flew over the bar.

It was an excellent awayday for Boreham Wood against a determined Sutton United side. In the end, Wood’s quality shone through.
