Lewis Richardson (48), Cameron Coxe (78), Charlie O'Connell (87)
Ollie Pearce (6), Ollie Banks (90+2)
The best performance of the season from Boreham Wood secured an incredible win against a York City team unbeaten in the National League since the 1st of October. The Minstermen went in front early on through Ollie Pearce before 2nd half goals from Lewis Richardson, Cameron Coxe and Charlie O’Connell were enough to see them over the line.
Luke Garrard named an unchanged lineup following Saturday’s defeat at Tamworth.
The visitors, in a rich vein of form, began on the ascendancy, and they got their reward with their first effort of the contest when Zak Johnson’s cross was met by Ollie Pearce for his 29th league goal of the season, as he buried it in at the back post with the aid of a deflection. Alex Hunt then had an effort from the edge of the area collected well by Ted Curd following a set piece routine, but from then on, Wood took over and dominated proceedings. They fashioned a good move involving Cameron Coxe, Zak Brunt and Lewis Richardson to allow Marley Marshall-Miranda to test ‘keeper Harrison Male from outside the area, but he was equal to it.
Morgan Williams then went close for the visitors with a volley over the bar, but Wood still kept pushing & seven minutes later, a lovely move involving Richardson and Brunt ended with Richardson having a goal bound shot blocked by Johnson. Matt Rush forced Male into a good save from point blank range in Wood’s biggest chance of the evening so far, before Zak Brunt went on a good run through the middle of the park before firing just wide. Abdul Abdulmalik had been quiet up to this point however he wasn’t to be ignored for long as he went on a mesmerising run before his cross was flicked against the post by a York City defender. Yet another Harrison Male save denied Matt Rush’s curling effort from outside the area, and the shot stopper had to then deny Ilesamni again as he forced Male into yet another outstanding save to finish off the half.
Wood started the second half where they left off in the first but this time they got the equaliser they so richly deserved just three minutes after the restart, as a well worked corner routine where Regan Booty played the ball to Brunt whose inch perfect cross was headed home by Richardson to send Meadow Park into raptures. Three minutes later, Richardson nearly got his second when he connected with an Abdulmalik cross which went wide following an awkwardly sliced effort. Boreham Wood’s search for a winner however was helped by a second yellow card and a sending off for City forward Josh Stones for a foul on Chris Bush.
Matt Rush went close a couple of times but was denied on both occasions by excellent saves by Male yet again, having kept his side in it several times in the ninety. However, his luck would run out as Wood took a deserved lead with twelve minutes to play when the ball was crossed in by Brunt and Cameron Coxe was quickest to react and buried the ball past Male through several bodies. The nail in the coffin arrived for Wood as they added a third when an excellent cross found Charlie O’Connell at the far post who headed home, but the drama wasn’t done there. Ollie Banks’ neat finish seat up a nervy finish for Wood as they had three minutes to hold onto a slender lead. Wood however did hold on for victory to the relief of the home dugout who celebrated a much needed victory against a table topping side.
