Zak Brunt (32, 52), Aaron Henry (90+2)
Jake Wannell (27), James Daly (71)
A brilliant 92nd-minute free-kick from Aaron Henry was enough to give Boreham Wood a much-needed 3–2 victory over Yeovil Town and end a wretched run of four defeats in a row, sending Meadow Park into raptures.
Luke Garrard made two changes from last week’s defeat at Rochdale, with Femi Ilesanmi returning ahead of Joe Newton at left-back and Lewis Richardson starting instead of Charles Clayden.
Boreham Wood largely dominated the first half and, for most of it, were camped in the visitors’ half. However, the only clear-cut chance they could muster in that period was an Abdul Abdulmalik effort that forced Yeovil goalkeeper Jed Ward into a good save on three minutes. The visitors showed very little in attack for most of the half but gave a sign of what was to come on 27 minutes when Terell Works’s shot was deflected just wide. From the resulting corner, there was a melee in the Wood penalty area, with no one able to clear it before Jake Wannell fired home.
After the poor run of results recently, Boreham Wood could have been shell-shocked by that goal, but they kept going and on 32 minutes they got their reward when the outstanding Zak Brunt finished well to equalise. Wood kept their momentum up and looked more likely to score leading into the break. Just before the interval, Matt Rush was one-on-one with Ward, but the Yeovil keeper produced an excellent save to ensure the sides were level at the interval.
Wood started the second half in the same vein and, three minutes after the restart, an Abdulmalik cross was just missing a touch from Rush. Wood made no mistake on 52 minutes, though, with a brilliant second goal to go in front. Abdulmalik went on an excellent run and played in Rush, who cut the ball back for a sublime finish from Brunt for his second goal of the night. On 63 minutes, the game was seemingly over when Kyle Ferguson received a second yellow card for the visitors, which meant an early bath for the Scotsman.
Yeovil, to their credit, were better with 10 men than they were with 11 and were more attacking afterwards. They equalised with an outstanding run and finish from recent substitute James Daly on 71 minutes. Three minutes later, Abdulmalik played in Rush who, once again, was denied by an excellent save from Ward. The rebound fell to Brunt, who was just off target. Daly went close again on 79 minutes but could not steer the ball past Nathan Ashmore.
Four minutes later, Brett McGavin played in Troy Perrett, who was denied by a good save from Ashmore. With four minutes of normal time left, Abdulmalik played in Brunt, who was denied by the pace of Daly, who somehow tracked back to clear the ball. Two minutes later, an Aaron Henry corner was headed just over by Cameron Coxe in what looked like it was to be Boreham Wood’s last chance. On the 92nd minute, it was all about Aaron Henry. The former Charlton Athletic midfielder has been on the bench, in the stand and on loan at Hornchurch this season, waiting patiently for his chance. When the free-kick was awarded, he bent it around Ward and into the corner of the net to secure all three points for Luke Garrard’s men.
It was a much-needed three points for Luke Garrard’s men after a poor run. The nature of the win has brought the feel-good factor back to the club going into an important run of fixtures.
