Boreham Wood once again came from behind to win a game, this time in the National League Cup against Newcastle United U21s. An early goal from Matheos Ferreira gave the Magpies the lead before an equaliser from Man of the Match Farhaan Ali Wahid and a winning goal from Zak Brunt secured the victory for Luke Garrard’s men.

Following Saturday’s win against Carlisle United, Luke Garrard handed starts to Ted Curd, Tylor Golden, Ollie Kensdale, Lewis Richardson, Farhaan Ali Wahid, Marley Marshall-Miranda and Jay Bird, while several players who are regulars in league matches took their place on the bench.

It was a strange first half, with the Magpies dominating the opening 25 minutes before Boreham Wood got their act together and began to take control.

Mason Miley forced Ted Curd into an excellent save in the first minute, and Newcastle continued to press afterwards, with Matheos Ferreira giving them the lead on 10 minutes with an excellent finish into Curd’s near post.

Three minutes later, Miley dispossessed Marley Marshall-Miranda before firing straight at Curd. On 19 minutes, Michael Mills outpaced Marshall-Miranda before forcing Curd into another good save.

It wasn’t until halfway through the first half that Wood were able to put some passes together, and on 26 minutes they nearly got their reward when an excellent pass from Regan Booty picked out Lewis Richardson, who fired just over the bar.

Soon afterwards, James Clarke got on the end of a Booty pass but shot just wide. The flag went up for offside anyway.

On 30 minutes, Farhaan Ali Wahid, who had been kept quiet up to that point, went on a good run before forcing an excellent save from Magpies goalkeeper Roman Dowell.

A minute later, Booty picked out Ali Wahid in space, who in turn found Jay Bird, whose acrobatic effort went just wide.

Wood were now turning the screw and, in the space of the next two minutes, both Ali Wahid and Tarryn Allarakhia forced further saves from Dowell.

Wood got a deserved equaliser just before the interval when Ali Wahid finished brilliantly after a great one-two with Allarakhia.

Wood came out for the second half in control and were creating good patterns of play around the Newcastle penalty area.

The second period’s first opportunity fell to Miley, who tried an audacious chip, which Curd did well to tip over the bar.

Luke Garrard rang the changes, and one of his substitutes got the winner, assisted by that man Farhaan Ali Wahid.

On 72 minutes, an inch-perfect cross from Ali Wahid found the head of Brunt, whose powerful header beat Dowell in the Magpies goal. It was a pass that Brunt would have been proud of himself.

Ali Wahid nearly added a third on 86 minutes after another good run but fired over. Two minutes later, Matt Rush forced Dowell into an excellent save, diving to his right-hand side.

Wood held out comfortably for the win.

Once again, Boreham Wood came up trumps in the National League Cup. It was a really useful exercise for the fringe players who don’t always get a start, and these wins breed confidence throughout the squad.
