Boreham Wood fell to a painful 1-0 defeat away to relegation battlers, Aveley, despite multiple chances and a potential penalty shout.

Luke Garrard made two changes from the 3-1 win at home to Farnborough in midweek with Tom Whelan slotting into midfield in place of Mo Sagaf and Junior Dixon making way for Kwesi Appiah.

The Wood started strong, pressing Aveley from the whistle. In the second minute, Luke Garrard’s men nearly created an early opportunity when Lee Ndlovu was fouled, setting up a free kick. Tom Whelan played it short to Jayden Richardson, who sent in a cross only for it to be cleared by a sea of Aveley blue. Moments later, Charles Clayden dribbled his way into the Aveley penalty area but was tackled before he could pull the trigger.

The Wood continued to create chances, with Clayden delivering a pinpoint cross in the 13th minute. Kwesi Appiah rose to meet it, but his header was caught by the Millers’ goalkeeper, Carey Bloedorn. Just a minute later, Tyrone Marsh attempted a long-range effort that was on target, but the Aveley number one was there again to make a crucial save.

Aveley responded with a threat of their own in the 19th minute, as Imran Uche fired from the edge of the box but sent it flying over the bar. The Wood’s appeals for a penalty in the 24th minute were waved away after Jayden Richardson was brought down in the box, and an offside call nullified a brilliant ball to Kwesi Appiah shortly after. A few more opportunities for the Wood ensued, with Clayden firing wide from a counterattack just before halftime.

HT: Aveley 0-0 Boreham Wood

Shortly into the second half, Whelan’s dangerous free-kick delivery couldn’t find a Wood player, leaving the score locked. Aveley found the breakthrough in the 52nd minute, with David Kawa slotting one past Nathan Ashmore. The Wood sought an equaliser, with Charlie O’Connell and Mo Sagaf both attempting shots that either missed or were saved by Bloedorn. Ashmore remained vigilant, pulling off two excellent saves to deny both Anifowose and Kawa from extending Aveley’s lead.

The Wood fought until the final whistle, with a late scramble in the box in stoppage time almost delivering the equalizer. Lee Ndlovu’s shot in the 90+4’ just missed, and Kwesi’s last-ditch effort in the 90+6’ was cleared off the line by an Aveley defender.

Despite a spirited performance and multiple chances, The Wood fell short, ending the match with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Aveley.
