Best Ever Season Ends On A High

Blue Square Bet South

Boreham Wood    4    Tonbridge Angels    2

by John Mead

A superb final day display from Wood secured an eighth place finish in the Blue Square Bet South, the Club’s most successful Season ever.

ood showed their defensive qualities that have been prevalent all Season, keeping the League’s runaway leading scorer Frannie Collin reasonably quiet, whilst threatening the visitors defence with some classy one touch attacking moves that never abated throughout the game.

Wood stormed into an early lead after eight minutes.    Luke Garrard played Graeme Montgomery through with a fine ball.    His shot was charged down by Ben Judge, with David Hutton picking up the pieces threading a fine ball back to Montgomery.    He showed superb technique taking a touch bringing the ball into a perfect striking position before hitting an unstoppable left footed shot across Lee Worgan into the bottom right hand corner of the net.    The pace of Wood’s movement in front of goal left the Angels defence wanting when Omer Riza, David Bryant and Montgomery worked the ball from left to right across the edge of the area.    Hutton finished the move volleying just over.

Chris Piper started and finished an attack after seventeen minutes that led to the equaliser.    Switching play from left to right wing he was on hand to finish a good move firing home from fifteen yards out, with Elvijs Putnins slipping before attempting to reach the shot that evaded his clutches at his right hand post.

Mark Jones turned in a fine display at left back often forcing play down the wing.    He fed Hutton who allowed Riza to cut in from the right hitting an audacious curling effort that was just wide of the top left hand corner of the net.    The entertainment continued with Montgomery in fine form for Wood.    He hit the top of the net with a free kick before predating a blocked shot from Riza forcing a fine reaction save from Worgan who acrobatically tipped the spinning deflected attempt over the crossbar.

After another Piper effort was ruled out for offside Wood went ahead again before the break.    Osei Sankofa played a ball down the right for Riza who squared for the lively Hutton.    He, in turn, laid up for Jones on the left who side footed home into the bottom right hand corner, ending a superb move.    Jones’ goal meant that every outfield player who took part in this game had scored for Wood this Season, a statistic that few teams can replicate at any level!

Nathan Koranteng went close for the visitors as did Bryant for Wood as Ian Allinson’s side attacked relentlessly after the break, only for the offside flag to frustrate.    Jones then played a brilliant one two with Hutton setting up Bryant who should have scored when well placed.    Koranteng then forced a full stretch save from Putnins before Collin inevitably bagged his twenty-ninth goal of the Season.    Danny Walder’s superb angled ball forward from the right was met by the goal scoring nemesis who rose to deftly flick home beyond Putnins to level the score after sixty-six minutes.

Yet Wood were rampant and three minutes later Riza hit the post from an unfeasible angle before Inih Effiong replaced Bryant.    Hutton, in his best game for the Club, then created Wood’s third, his cross from the left was predated by Riza with Tim Olorunda slicing the ball beyond his own ‘keeper.    Two minutes later and ruthless Wood made the points safe.    Sam Cox played Effiong through on goal and he ran forward finding space to slot home beyond Worgan.    A celebratory cheer went up when Mario Noto made his first appearance after a ten game lay-off, five minutes before the end of a truly fantastic Season for Wood.    There was still time for Collin to hit the crossbar, but the 4 – 2 victory stood, meaning Wood had hit ten goals in their last three outings, showing just how far the side has come.

In summary, Ian Allinson was “very pleased with the performance.    Tonbridge Angels came to play football as well and with the zip in the pitch it made for an entertaining afternoon.    We will be busy over the next seven to ten days trying to secure the services of most of the team for next Season.    Graeme Montgomery has signed which is another massive boost for us as we try to take our momentum over to next Season.”

Noto concluded “Let’s also not forget that in November we sold PASE prodigy Pelly Ruddock to a London Football giant West Ham United. At the club we show we have a clear pathway from our PASE teams to our First Team and beyond.”

PLAYER UPDATE

Boreham Wood are delighted to announce the signings of their Centre Half duo, Charlie O’Loughlin and Callum Reynolds for the 2012/2013 season.

Charlie signed for the Wood last summer from Solihull Moors, whereas Callum only joined Wood from Tamworth on loan in March. However both players have been instrumental in Wood’s recent good form, which has seen them cement a top 10 finish whilst still looking to clinch their highest ever league finish of 8th in the Blue Square Bet South.

Wood Manager Ian Allinson and his assistant Luke Garrard have also been busy in the last few weeks trying to finalise deals with Omer Riza, Sam Cox, Mark Jones, Graeme Montgomery and David Bryant, who have all been made offers for the 2012/2013 season.

Offers of re-engagement will also be made to the younger players within the changing room, which includes Inih Effiong, Simeon Akinola, David Hutton, Omar Beckles, Ruddock Yala, Sam Doolan and Harvey Scott-Morris.

Club Captain/Assistant Manager Luke Garrard said “Our squad is starting to take shape even at this early stage… I really believe if we can retain a large majority of this year’s squad with a few quality additions and have that little bit of luck with injuries next campaign, we can have a good season and push for a playoff position.”

Boreham Wood are delighted to announce that PASE students Charlie Hunter and Dan Loveday have accepted their scholarship offers from Universities in the United States to play ‘Soccer’ whilst doing a degree.

Both Charlie and Dan follow in the footsteps of former BWFC PASE Captain and First Team Playoff winner Jon Clements, who won a similar scholarship to Fairfield University in Connecticut in 2010.

Charlie Scores Again!

Blue Square Bet South

Dartford    2    Boreham Wood    2

by John Mead

With The Darts already assured of a second place finish and Wood merely protecting their eighth spot in the table anybody thinking that only pride was at stake would have been hugely mistaken.    Ian Allinson finally had a full Squad from which to select, which was a godsend against very strong opponents.

The Darts squandered two early chances.    James Rogers running central skipped past challenges from Sam Cox and Luke Garrard before lifting his effort over the bar.    Then Mark Jones gave the ball straight to Tony Garrod who shot wide when well placed.    Wood quickly found their feet playing some good passing football, whilst Garrard and Jones produced some excellent tackles to protect Elvijs Putnins’ goal.

Garrard picked up a booking before The Darts opened their account from their second corner of the game.    Tom Champion delivered a goal bound header that was deflected past Putnins at the right hand post by Garrod.

Wood however responded well and Cox went close from the edge of the area after some great hold up play inside the penalty area from David Bryant.

The Wood equaliser came from a fine defence splitting ball from Jones who found Bryant inside the area.    He controlled before squaring across the box from the left.    Omer Riza dummied giving Graeme Montgomery space to hit a sweetly struck left footed shot into the top left hand corner of the net after thirty minutes.

Riza then saw a shot charged down by Tom Bonner before Wood constructed the move of the match. Osei Sankofa played out of defence to Cox who played a superb one touch exchange with Montgomery before releasing Garrard whose effort from just outside the area was  high of the target.

Dartford were suitably upset by Wood’s dominance and embarked upon a mission to get Garrard sent off, rather than concentrate on the task in hand.    Danny Harris and Charlie O’Loughlin then contributed to the tense atmosphere with both players lucky to still have a shirt on their backs in a number of clashes in what was a fractious end to the half.    Riza was tripped when he span exquisitely away from his marker with David Hutton’s free kick failing to trouble Louis Wells.

Thankfully Dartford concentrated on playing football after the break and found Wood a tough nut to crack.    Garrard defended well, before Putnins raced out of his area to clear the impending danger as Wood played with authority turning defence into attack.    Harris won a race with Putnins on the edge of the area but the great team effort continued with Montgomery on hand to mop up behind his ‘keeper.

Thirty-two year old Riza showed his incredible fitness bursting onto a lofted ball forward.    He got beyond Adam Green only for Paul Goodacre to haul him down in a fifty-fifty challenge.    With Riza the last man and falling well inside the area, Referee Mr. Woolford erred on the side of sensibility giving a free kick right on the edge of the area and just a yellow card allow the Darts man to compete in the two legged Play-offs for promotion.

The introduction of Jacob Erskine gave the home side a lift and four minutes later Lee Noble picked him out on the edge of the area from a right sided cross and he hit a sweet first time volley which tucked right into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.    It came a little against the run of play and was certainly not what Wood had deserved from their excellent performance.

With two minutes remaining the equaliser came.    Jones was held up delivering his free kick from the right by some fussy officiating.  Luckily for Wood Mr. Woolford pinpointed the exact spot for Jones to deliver a telling cross that O’Loughlin ran onto diving to head home a fantastic goal, his second in two games, to cap a fine afternoon on the road.

“It was important to contain them for the first twenty minutes, which we spoke about before the game. Then we go and concede but showed tremendous character in how we reacted after both their goals. We played very well today and did enough I thought to have won the game.    The superb move in the first half when Luke Garrard blasted over and the second half run of Omer Riza which on another day would have been a penalty and a red card were the defining moments for me, as I thought the challenge was inside the area.”    Ian Allinson went on to explain the commitment shown by his side with little at stake adding, “This game was about planning for next Season and Dartford were in no mood to roll over.    I would hope to keep the nucleus of this Squad intact as we are very near to a finished product that can stake a claim for a Play-off place and that was evident today.”

Team:    Putnins, Sankofa, Jones, Garrard, Reynolds, O’Loughlin, Hutton (Sub – Akinola 81 mins.), Cox, Bryant, Riza, Montgomery (Sub – Effiong 81 mins.).

Bookings:    Garrard, Riza.

WOOD WIN SESSA CUP

SESSA CHALLENGE CUP FINAL
COHENEL COLLEGE BOREHAM WOOD VS TOWER HAMLET COLLEGE

In the glorious sunshine Boreham Wood’s PASE Academy picked up their first trophy of the season with a 2 – 1 win over Tower Hamlets College on Wednesday afternoon.

The game was a nervous affair with both sides not wanting to give anything away in the opening exchanges. Boreham Wood adopted an attacking  4-3-3 system with Jermaine Izukanne and Jaac Stone either side of Sebastian Headley spearheading the attack.

Daniel Longa Longa impressed playing out of position at centre half commanding the back four made up of Chris Omole, Marvin Birch and Daniel Addae. A few half chances were squandered early in the game and it was the defences who came out on top in the first half as they went into the break all square after a goalless first half.

The 2nd half sparked into life when Seb Headley finished clinically as he was put through with pass from Matt Newman, who alongside Captain Abdul Marong dictated the midfield for Wood. Marong has been the rock of the team excelling on and off the pitch completing a Level 3 Sports Btec with a Distinction/Merit grade, and is now looking to go on to university.

Unfortunately the joy was short lived, Tower Hamlets capitalised on a lack of concentration and equalised within 5 minutes erasing Wood’s advantage. As the game restarted, it again became a tight affair with Izukanne and Headley squandering chances, as it looked to be heading for extra time.

Wood’s players worked tirelessly and the heat started to affect both teams and more mistakes where being made. Finally the breakthrough came after some neat work and a little bit of luck by Marong, Newman and Stone.

The ball found its way back to Marong who sized up a cross from the right for Izukanne in the box, miscuing his cross it ended up going directly over the opposition keeper and nestling in the back of the net for a 2 – 1 lead.

Seeing out the game was now the priority but it was easier said than done with Tower Hamlets pushing for the equaliser. With not long on the clock Tower Hamlets scored again but the goal was deemed offside and Wood could begin the celebrations as the final whistle blew.

PASE Coach Ryan Kirby said ‘It wasn’t a game for the neutral but I am delighted for the boys and with the win. The boys worked so hard all game and have done all year. The scheme has helped them develop and it will be a memory that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. It’s just shows that if you have the right attitude, discipline and desire you can achieve great things.’

Squad – Miles Forde, Marvin Birch, Chris Omole, Daniel Long Longa, Daniel Addae, Ola Olunsamade, Mat Newman, Abdul Marong© Jermaine Izukanne, Jaac Stone, Sebastian Headley. Subs: Martin Gomes, Robbie Hassan, Raphael Owusu, Bradley Tshibangu.
