MATCH PREVIEW – MAIDENHEAD UNITED

Match Preview – Maidenhead United V’s Boreham Wood
Saturday 25th February 2012 – Kick off 3.00pm
Blue Square Bet South

This Saturday, 25th February 2012 Boreham Wood travel to Berkshire to take on Maidenhead United in the Blue Square Bet South, kick off 3.00pm.

Maidenhead currently (Monday) sit just one place behind Boreham Wood in 15th place on equal number of points (33), however with a worse goal difference, so the game is sure to be a close encounter.

So far this season Maidenhead have won 9, drew 6 and lost 14 from their 29 league games, scoring 36 and conceding 52 in the process. However ‘The Magpies’ currently are experiencing a string of positive results, sitting 5th in the form guide having lost just once in league since the start of the New Year.

Earlier in the season both sides played out a tight encounter, which ‘Wood’ narrowly edged 1-0 with a penalty from David Hutton. Hopefully ‘Wood’ can replicate that result this Saturday and return to Meadow Park with a much needed 3 points.

It could well prove to be an important game in ‘Wood’s’ season as we want to pull ourselves away from those sides who look to be in a relegation battle. So travel along to York Road this Saturday and get behind the boys!

C’mon ‘The Wood!’

Address: York Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, SL6 1SF.

Wood Frustrated By Stubborn Sports

Blue Square Bet South

Boreham Wood    1    Eastbourne Borough    1

by John Mead

Wood failed to find the required ingredients to avenge this Season’s earlier 3 – 2 reverse against The Sports.    At start of play the visitors, whom like Wood have suffered a dip in form of late, were sitting just three points above the drop zone, with Wood holding a five point advantage over their opponents.

Yet this was the first game in charge at Borough for Tommy Widdrington the ex-Salisbury City and more recently Hemel Hempstead Town Manager, which offered a psychological advantage from the Kick Off.    However Wood had an antidote with the re-signing of QPR ‘keeper Elvijs Putnins on a short term Loan.    Putnins was present for Wood’s best run of form earlier in the Season, playing a part in six of Wood’s eleven victories this Season, whilst playing in less than a third of all Wood’s games.

The game was a scrappy affair in poor conditions with heavy rain leading to a soft surface.    Both goals were pieces of individual brilliance, with the visitors offering a physical presence throughout, combined with some first class defending to frustrate Ian Allinson’s side.

Wood went behind to a master strike after just six minutes.    Ben Watson’s telling cross from the left was headed out of the penalty area by Omar Beckles where Matt Smart unleashed a quite brilliant dipping volley that sailed thirty yards and just under the crossbar.

Wood’s stuttering start continued save for some stand out muscle from Sam Cox, who controlled proceedings in the centre of the park.

Luke Garrard and Osei Sankofa combined with the latter’s cross perfect for David Bryant who headed straight onto the arms of Rikki Banks from just six yards out.

The Sports goal scorer then felled Billy Lobjoit some thirty five yards from goal out on the left wing.    Mario Noto whipped in a low effort that bounced once before flashing past Banks into the bottom left hand corner of the net, making it two stunning goals in as many games for the Wood Captain.

Bryant spurned a superb opportunity after fifty-eight minutes to forge ahead.    David Hutton’s cross from the left was headed back across goal by Charlie O’Loughlin finding Bryant at the near post.    A volley looked on the cards but he took a touch before scuffing his shot wide of the post.

Four minutes later and a poor mistake by Beckles played in Watson and with only Putnins to beat he lashed his shot against the crossbar.

With Wood unable to break through the stubborn Sports, Sam Lechmere and Mauro Vilhete, a  debutante eighteen year old Loan signing from Barnet were introduced, unfortunately to little effect.

Daniel Brathwaite delivered a pacy cross from the left which Luke Garrard headed just wide, before at the other end Watson capitalised upon more shaky defending, this time Putnins showing his quality with a great save.

Late on Noto did all the hard work keeping the ball in play only to shoot into the side netting, leaving the draw a fair result on the afternoon.

Team:    Putnins, Sankofa, Brathwaite, Garrard, Beckles, O’Loughlin, Hutton (Sub – Lechmere 71 mins.), Cox, Bryant, Noto, Lobjoit (Sub – Vilhete 71 mins.).

Subs (Not used):    Hunter, Akinola, Jordan.

Goals:    Boreham Wood:    Noto 34.            Eastbourne Borough:    Smart 6.

Man of the Match:    Sam Cox.

MATCH PREVIEW – EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

Match preview – Boreham Wood V Eastbourne Borough
Saturday 18th February 2012 – kick off 3.00pm
Blue Square Bet South

This Saturday, 18th February 2012 Boreham Wood host Eastbourne Borough at Meadow Park in the Blue Square Bet South, kick off 3.00pm.

Eastbourne currently sit 4 places behind ‘Wood’ in 18th position in the Blue Square South, having won 7, drew 6 and lost 13 of their 26 games so far this campaign, whilst scoring 40 and conceding 49 in the process.

The Sports currently sit rock bottom of the League’s form guide at present having lost their last 4 league games. However ‘Wood’s’ form is not much better and, we sit 3rd from bottom in the form guide, having picked up only 4 points from our last 6 matches, so both sides would like to start at good run of form with a win this Saturday.

Both sides know that they are in for a tough game this Saturday after playing a hard fought game earlier in the season back in September. That day Eastbourne took a 3-0 lead into half time; however ‘Wood’ fought back and showed character in the second half to lose narrowly 3-2 to The Sports at Langney Sports Club.

It could prove to be an important game in ‘Wood’s’ season as we want to pull ourselves away from those sides who look to be in a relegation battle.

C’mon ‘The Wood!’

Our Best Away Show Yet!

Blue Square Bet South

Sutton United    2    Boreham Wood    1

 by John Mead

Wood Manager Ian Allinson hailed this display, “Our best away performance of the Season. We looked sharper, fitter and took the game to a side fifth in the Division.”    Yet Wood failed to win a game that they matched their opponents in first half, before playing all the football on show in the second half.

The difference in the two sides was highlighted in the respective performances of goalkeepers Kevin Scriven and Michael Jordan, the latter whom Allinson felt, “Should not have conceded their opportunist first half goal which he got totally wrong.”    Scriven meanwhile was faultless at the other end with Wood creating the lion’s share of chances especially in the second half.

Wood had a chance cleared off the line after twelve minutes when Charlie O’Loughlin beat Scriven with his looping header from a David Hutton free kick which defender Michael Boateng managed to clear from underneath the crossbar.    Billy Lobjoit then tried his arm from long range after good work from Sam Cox, his effort just high.    The home side then spurned a clear cut chance to take the lead after a sluggish start.    Leroy Griffiths who was the stand out player for the U’s on the night crossed to the far post from the left and Harry Beautyman somehow headed wide across goal with the goal gaping at the far post.

Some fine defending from forward David Bryant then denied the forward foraging Boateng.    With Griffiths enjoying space in between Osei Sankofa and Mario Noto out on the left it was obvious where the threat of attack was coming from, until Wood took the lead in some fashion after twenty-nine minutes.    A miskick by Anwar Uddin was predated on the goal line by Bryant and he found Lobjoit just inside the area who fed Noto. who was back to his brilliant best on the night after a long spell on the sidelines.    The talismanic Wood Captain swiveled to send a quite sumptuous looping shot over Scriven which dropped into the top right hand corner of the net.

Yet for all the Wood endeavour the U’s equalised six minutes later when an opportunist low drive from twenty five yards out from Craig Dundas took a slight deflection outside the area.    Jordan failed to judge the flight of the ball which went through his body.    Lobjoit had an effort well saved when Wood broke incisively.    Mark Jones’ clearance found Noto who in turn fed Bryant whose understanding with the eighteen year old Orient work experience player continues to flourish.

Joel Ledgister then had Jordan floundering at the near post with his ball in from the right for Beautyman.     O’Loughlin’s interception saved a certain goal.    O’Loughlin was a rock in defence second half, which allowed Wood to go on and control the game.    Beautyman’s overhit cross which hit the roof of the net after seventy minutes was as close as the home side came to penetrating the Wood defence.

Some sloppy defending allowed Hutton to slip in beating Scriven to the ball, only for his shot to be cleared off the line by Sam Page.    Some fine flowing football from Wood followed with a period of sustained pressure in the Suttton United half.    Luke Garrard’s lob was perfect for Lobjoit, yet the superb Griffiths now playing in defence mopped up.    The killer blow came against the run of play from a Sutton corner after eighty-six minutes.    Sankofa cleared only as far as Beautyman who volleyed home a real firecracker from twelve yards out that Jordan failed to get a hand on.

Wood did not buckle however creating more chances late on.    Bryant and Lobjoit combined with Scriven in a perfect position to repel Lobjoit’s fierce drive.    Then late Substitute Sam Lechmere picked out Lobjoit with a cross, yet Scriven won the day with another fine save to repel the resultant header.    In summary Allinson concluded, “I am really happy with the performance yet mistakes let us down.    We have worked really hard during the frozen spell and we have the facilities to allow us to keep training.    Two off the line and some great work by their ‘keeper cost us the points.    I am looking to bolster the Squad to give competition in some areas for places.”

Team:    Jordan, Sankofa, Jones (Sub – Brathwaite 77 mins.), Cox, O’Loughlin, Beckles, Noto (Sub – Akinola 87 mins.), Garrard, Bryant, Lobjoit, Hutton (Sub – Lechmere 90 mins.).

Subs (Not used):    Hunter, Scott-Morris.

Bookings:    Cox.

Goals:    Sutton United:    Dundas 35, Beautyman 86.            Boreham Wood:    Noto 29.

Man of the Match :    Mario Noto.
