Boreham Wood 4-1 Stanmore

Wood faced a strong and well organised Stanmore side in the First Round of the English Colleges National Cup.

With both sides having good history in the cup, it was always going to be a tight and cagey affair. Stanmore drew first blood when a quick corner caught the Wood of guard for them to volley into the near post.

The game settled and both sides looked to take the ascendancy, Boreham Wood coming close with Sterling Parker driving his effort just over the bar. Stanmore’s resilience was soon broken after the half when a well worked set piece allowed for skipper Sam Doolan to power his header home from 6yards out.

Wood soon dominated with high tempo football and pressing that soon led to the second when Marcio Cruz played an exquisite through ball that freed Raheem Sterling Parker to finish with real quality over the advancing Goal keeper.

The game was out of reach for the visiting team when Maxwell Holland sealed their fate, again from a set piece the live wire winger rose above the defence to direct a looping header in to the far corner.

Marcio Cruz scored the goal of the game when Samuel Whiting played a ball into the midfielder’s path for him to delicately chip the goal keeper from the edge of the area to seal the game.

Wood now progress into the Second Round and await the draw.

Manager Luke Garrard was pleased with the response “After losing an early goal to a set piece it was a great response and great show of character from the team, they could of showed real impatience as Stanmore did defend very well and didn’t look as though the goal was coming, but great timing just after the half to get the leveller, than we showed our pace and power to take the game to them and got are just rewards”
