Last Tuesday afternoon, Boreham Wood’s First Team Manager Luke Garrard and members of the Club’s First Team playing and coaching staff visited our friends at the local Elstree & Borehamwood Dementia Club. These included our First Team Coach and Academy Manager Cameron Mawer, as well players Kane Smith and Sorba Thomas.
The visit was to mark the handover of our recent festive fundraising efforts for the Dementia Club, after our First Team and PASE Academy players joined our coaching team and staff at the local TESCO store to pack local shoppers bags during the Christmas rush, as well as raising further funds through our well-supported community raffle, with a signed Arsenal framed shirt as first prize.
In total the Club raised close to £1,500 over three days for local good causes and are very proud to have raised £500 for the Dementia Club, whose work is a lifeline for so many local people and is a community necessity.
As such Luke Garrard, Cameron Mawer, Kane Smith and Sorba Thomas joined one of the Dementia Club volunteers and founders in Town Counsellor Sandra Parnell, plus other Club organisers, volunteers and club users, to see first hand and involve themselves in the great work that this local Club is delivering, as well as present the charitable cheque.
After the cheque presentation, BWFC Chairman Danny Hunter said, “This club is a real godsend to so many as this disease doesn’t discriminate, it doesn’t only affect the person suffering with Dementia, it affects every loved one within their family and so many of our local families.
“If I can, along with my staff and players, help such a worthy cause in some small way, to raise much needed funds for Sandra, for a local Club and in turn, if that helps these incredible volunteers and the Dementia Club, then it’s the very least we can do.”
We also caught up with Dementia Club organiser Sandra Parnell, who said, “Some of the team at Boreham Wood FC came to our Dementia Club to present us with a very generous cheque today. Danny Hunter made the Elstree & Borehamwood Dementia Club one of his chosen charities a number of years ago and donates to the Club on a regular basis, it is very much appreciated. Our thanks for being such a very special friend of our Club.”
As a Football Club we adopted a “support all things local” mantra some years ago, and we would just like to congratulate and praise the Dementia Club and their volunteers for their continued hard work, selflessness and dedication to what is an absolutely amazing cause. We look forward to continuing our support of the work they do to help those in need moving forward.
In addition, Boreham Wood FC would also like to thank TESCO, their staff, in particular Marion Nolan their ‘Community Champion’ and everybody for their kindness and who donated so generously during our festive fundraising!
