Boreham Wood 1 – 1 Gower Swansea

2 – 2 After Extra Time

Boreham Wood Win 4 – 2 on penalties

Boreham Wood FC Under 19s progress through to the Second Round after winning on penalties against the National Champions from last year.

Wood started bright with initial link up play with Raheem Sterling-Parker and Robert Hastings after going close in the initial stages, but Wood had an uphill battle after Captain Harvey Scott was sent off for a professional foul on 12minutes.

Wood still looked the most threatening in front of goal and soon took the lead after Robert Hastings breached Swansea back line and was brought down by the advancing goalkeeper, Raheem Sterling-Parker coolly slotted home to give Wood the deserved lead.

Wood looked to be advancing into the Second Round with only 5minutes to play but Swansea constant pressure was rewarded as they swung a great cross deep into the wood area and was finished with real quality into the roof of the net.

Extra Time was to be played and again much like the 90 minutes Wood was looking likely to take the lead, but Swansea were the team to take the advantage when their skipper struck from 30yards out to make it 2-1 in their favour, Wood had two great opportunities to level the match but Jack Vasey and dean Rubinia unable to work the goalkeeper, with minutes remaining it was Woods turn to get an equaliser with a real classy finish which see Dean Rubinia evade the off side trap and cutely lobbing the goalkeeper taking the tie into Penalty Kicks.

Jake Knight was the hero in the shoot-out with two great saves allowing third year midfielder to deliver the final blow and place his penalty into the roof of the net giving Wood a 4-2 victory.

Manager Luke Garrard said “We was very professional and disciplined when we were down to 10 men, there was a focus and an understanding that the shape was important when we wasn’t in possession, the boys showed great character to come back late in extra Time and then to win on penalties, we now progress in the cup and await the draw for the next round.”
