MATCH REPORT: BOREHAM WOOD U18’S VS HANWELL TOWN U18’S

Cameron Mawer’s U’18’s got off to a flying start in this year’s FA Youth Cup against Hanwell Town.

Wood who have a fine crop of youngsters in their ranks this year, showed their talent on the pitch as the players put in a dominant performance against a hard working Hanwell Town side.

The more this young Wood team play together the better they will get and despite tonight’s performance, there is still so much more to come from this set of players.

The game though was won in the first half, as Wood produced some magical football at times to lead 4-1. The youngsters with the game won, perhaps understandably took their foot off the pedal in the second half but could still have extended the lead further, albeit with the game finishing 5-1.

Wood lined up in a familiar 4-5-1 out of possession formation, that turns into a 4-3-3 formation when in possession.. this is something that very much mirrors the first team with their style of play and is superbly led by Academy Captain Ben Goodliffe.

The boys made a bright start a cross as Alex Morgan found Sorba Thomas who forced the keeper into a fine save. Sorba Thomas who was a livewire all night down the left, played a delightful ball to the back post but Alex Morgan could only head into the side netting.

The high tempo continued as firstly Bradley Sach drifted wide to pick up the ball played a neat ball through to Cass Grant who should have gone across goal but shot straight at the Hanwell keeper who made a fine save.. Wood’s persistence though finally paid off as we opened the scoring after great persistence from Alex Morgan, who put in a pin point cross to Sorba Thomas to head into the top corner of the net.

A rare attack from Hanwell Town and Shaq Ishmael curled over the bar after a loose ball as the Wood defence failed to clear their lines properly.

Wood surged forward looking to put the game to bed before halftime and Archie Peoper slid Sorba Thomas in on goal, he then cut it back into Peoper pathwho but his initial shot was well saved but from the rebound Bradley Sach made no mistake doubling Woods lead.

Bruno Tandres then pulled one back for Hanwell, from a rare counter attack after Wood carelessly lost possession and a ball across goal was slotted past Terrell Annakie.

This just Wood up and Ben Goodliffe squandered a great chance to extend our lead as Bradley Sach firstly won the ball before crossing with his left foot and with the keeper to beat, Goodliffe put the ball the wrong side of the post.

Wood though got their third and deservedly so, after winning yet another corner, from which Bradley Sach rose highest in the box to head beyond the stranded Alex Ravenshill.. Ben Goodliffe then added Woods fourth, which in truth was a carbon copy of the third. A corner from the right was put on a plate for skipper Goodliffe, who powered home his header.

A rare mistake at the back from Sam Walsh allowed Shaq Ishmael a shot at goal which was well blocked by Alex Radu. Bradley Sach also had a great chance to add a fifth, when a ball into the box from Sorba Thomas found Sach unmarked, but he put his header just wide.

Wood continued to pepper the Hanwell goal and when Bradley Sach a young powerhouse up front, held off his man with his back to goal, he found a yard of space to get his shot off, which was again well saved by the Hanwell keeper.

Frustration was beginning to show when Sorba Thomas got down the left, crossed onto the head of Alex Morgan who cushioned his header into the path of Bradley Sach, who then headed onto the bar and over.

Then Alfie Peoper who had marshalled the Wood midfield superbly all evening, again played in Alex Morgan who got to the by-line before cutting back for sub Ashtyn Mitchell, who should have scored but again forced a fine save from the bust Hanwell keeper.

Alex Radu dis finally add a fifth goal late on. When a short training ground corner was taken and Sorba Thomas put a deep ball into the box which was headed back across goal by Ben Goodliffe, which allowed Alex Radu to score beyond the helpless Alex Ravenshill..

All in all it was a good nights work from Woods youngsters and we look forward to finding out our opponents in the FA Youth cup draw later in the week..
