WOOD AND BROMLEY SHARE THE SPOILS
Boreham Wood 1-1 Bromley
Tuesday 23rd February 2021, 7.45pm
Meadow Park, Vanarama National League
An entertaining encounter between Boreham Wood and Bromley produced the same 1-1 scoreline as when these sides met at Hayes Lane earlier in the season.
Boreham Wood were unchanged from Saturday’s 3-2 victory at Altrincham but were able to include now fit, Zaine Francis-Angol and Adam McDonnell on the bench. Wood were the better side in the first half and were constantly on the front foot, there was some excellent interplay between Corey Whitely, Kane Smith and Tyrone Marsh as they attempted to break down a resolute Ravens defence that was well marshalled by skipper Jack Holland.
After twenty-two minutes, Whitely, who was a constant threat all night, ran through the Bromley defence at pace but unfortunately when he pulled the trigger, his effort was superbly blocked by Chris Bush. Seven minutes later, Boreham Wood took a deserved lead as Tyrone Marsh’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected past Mark Cousins in the Bromley goal. Wood went in at half time on top with their one goal advantage.
In the second half, Bromley were much better and had most of the play. The visitors equalised on fifty-five minutes through Courtney Duffus when his well struck effort gave Nathan Ashmore no chance in the Wood goal. Gus Mafuta headed over the bar from a Kane Smith cross on seventy-one minutes and jus six minutes later, Raven substitute Charlie Wakefield struck an effort against the crossbar with Ashmore beaten. A minute later, the former Ebbsfleet United stopper produced a fantastic save from Michael Cheek.
On eighty minutes an excellent move involving Whitely and Marsh, led to Kabs Tshimanga hitting a shot that went just wide of Cousins goal, soon afterwards there was a goal line scrabble in the Wood area before Ashmore produced another excellent save. At eighty-eight minutes of play, Tyrone Marsh nearly added his second but was denied by an excellent block just when it looked like it was going in.
With Sorba Thomas now at Championship side Huddersfield Town, another former BW PASE Academy graduate who returned to the club last summer, Corey Whitely has been playing in the left wing back spot that Thomas occupied so well and its fair to say that his performances have been fantastic in recent weeks. Whitely was once again instrumental in a lot of the good work that Boreham Wood produced at both ends of the pitch. Luke Garrard will be disappointed that they didn’t collect all three points having led at half time. However, after a game of two halves the result couldve gone either way this evening.
