Town Sleeps As Wood Go Nap!

Boreham Wood 5  Dorchester Town 0,

by John Mead.

After missing a hat full of chances in the opening forty minutes, Wood produced a score line that their dominance deserved. It was a one sided affair with Wood producing a display that simply blew the depleted visitors away.

This could well be the turning point of the season for Ian Allinson’s side. Collecting nine points from the last twelve is their best run of form to date this campaign, lifting the side to 15th in the table.

Alan Walker-Harris in The Magpies goal was the best player on the park for the visitors who saved them from an even more embarrassing defeat. In the third minute Austin Lipman controlled the ball well to embark upon a central run that took him past the defence coming face to face with Walker-Harris who came out to save a certain goal.

Wood dominated the play comprehensively. With Sam Cox focused and impregnable in midfield, it allowed Graeme Montgomery and Matty Whichelow licence to create wave upon wave of attack.

The pair combined after 15 minutes with Montgomery’s cross headed back across goal by Lipman for Anthony Jeffery whose looping header had the beating of Walker-Harris but struck the crossbar.

This effort livened up the Arsenal youngster who tested the shot stopper less than a minute later with a fine effort. He continued to threaten when a clearance by the Magpies defence hit one of their own allowing Jeffery to loft a high ball to the far post which Walker-Harris somehow cleared from under the crossbar.

It was then the turn of the post to deny Jeffrey, his low shot fizzed past Walker-Harris but not the woodwork. Jeffrey then turned provider with Montgomery next up to be foiled by the diving custodian, who then had to rush out of his area to deny Jeffrey after a superb through ball from Whichelow. However his clearance went only as far as Lipman who missed the open goal from thirty yards out.

Jeffrey shot wide twice thereafter when through on goal, before finally opening the scoring when bravely sliding in to poke the ball home after Whichelow and Lipman had set up the opportunity.

If the first half was frustrating, the second period saw all Wood’s dominance come to fruition. Town seemed to pacify Wood from the restart, but it lasted just five minutes. Forcing two quick corners, the ball came to Montgomery on the left whose crafted left footed pass for Callum Reynolds to slide in on at the far post was one of the best assists seen this season.

Straight from the restart Wood surged into a three goal lead. Ashley Vickers, the most experienced man on the field had called upon all of his nous to stop Lipman during the first half. Yet his forty one year old frame failed on this occasion to stop the Arsenal youngster who skinned his marker crossing towards goal, where Frazer Colmer could only half clear. The chance fell to Whichelow who still had work to do before firing home.

Some superb trickery from Montgomery allowed Jeffrey another chance to add to his tally, but Walker-Harris was having none of it. He could do little however after 79 minutes when Wood recorded their fourth goal of the afternoon. A superb curling free kick from Lipman who had set up the initial attack left the keeper no chance.

There was still time for a fifth. Substitute Matthew Ball’s power drive from just out side the area looked to be going just wide until it struck Reynolds before flying into the back of the net.

Dan Munday could have bagged a late consolation for the hapless visitors but his shot was held by James Russell, who could in truth have gone shopping for the afternoon.

Ian Allinson praised his side’s win, “ We worked hard in training on certain things and they came to fruition today. The first goal took a while in coming and I told AJ after the game he could actually have come off with five goals to his name had he taken all his chances!

I thought Callum Reynolds was outstanding today. We missed him for ten weeks of this season due to injury and the statistics bear witness to his importance to the side. I was also pleased with the way Matty Whichelow took his chance in the side today. He has had a tough campaign hampered by injury and has struggled to retain his place. This win will do no harm to our confidence !”
