Boreham Wood vs. Grimsby Town
Saturday 19th March 2022, KO 3.00pm
LV BET Stadium Meadow Park, Vanarama National League

THE CONTEXT

This Saturday, Wood take on fellow promotion hopefuls Grimsby Town at the LV BET Stadium Meadow Park, looking to bounce back from their poor defeat at Barnet last time out.

The Mariners have bounced back from a disappointing run of just two wins in 14 games that brought 11 defeats in all competitions, and have moved back into the play-off places in recent weeks, currently sitting seventh with just one point separating them with Notts County in eighth.

Wood made it four games without a win after losing to Barnet last time out and will be keen to return to the kind of form they showed during the early part of the season starting this weekend.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”
LUKE WATERFALL

Central defender Luke Waterfall began his career at Barnsley but joined Tranmere Rovers after a successful trial, departing Birkenhead after just a season following a brief loan spell with Altrincham. He signed for Conference North side Ilkeston Town before moving onto league rivals Gainsborough Trinity the following summer. After making over 100 appearances for the Holy Blues he signed for Scunthorpe United, and later enjoyed spells at Wrexham, Lincoln City and Shrewsbury Town following loan spells at Macclesfield Town and Mansfield Town. He was later unveiled as a Grimsby player, the same day he was released by the Shrews.

“THE PLAYMAKER”
ERICO SOUSA

A Portugal youth international, Erico Sousa moved to England when he was just ten years old, joining the youth team of Manchester City before moving on to the Barnsley FC academy. He briefly moved to Hyde United before joining Slovenian side NK Celje where he made his senior debut, but after initially establishing himself in the team found opportunities hard to come by. He returned to England in 2017 and enjoyed stints at Tadcaster United, Accrington Stanley, Tranmere Rovers, Barrow and Darlington. His form at the latter attracted the interest of Grimsby Town, and his move to the Mariners was completed last summer.

“THE FINISHER”
JOHN MCATEE

Star man John McAtee has been one of the key performers for Grimsby Town so far this season. A Shrewsbury Town academy graduate, the 22-year old enjoyed numerous stints out on loan with Halesowen Town, AFC Telford United, Ashton United, Telford and Curzon Ashton before being released by the Shrews in May 2019. He made the switch to Scunthorpe United where he remained for two years, but he turned down a new contract offer to join Grimsby Town last summer to reunite with manager Paul Hurst for a third time after previously playing under him at Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe.

LAST TIME WE MET

Grimsby Town 0-0 Boreham Wood
Saturday 13th February 2016
Blundell Park, National League

Relegation threatened Boreham Wood were determined to go against the odds against promotion chasers Grimsby Town, dominating the first half with chances for Conor Clifford and Luke Howell going amiss early on. Grimsby grew into the game and began to threaten with Jon-Paul Pittman proving a handful up top, with James Russell in the Wood goal needing to be at his best throughout. The hosts found they were most dangerous from corners, but a string of remarkable saves in the second half along with the central defensive pair of Dave Stephens and Scott Doe remaining resilient meant Grimsby were frustrated, with the Wood holding out for a valuable point.
