PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”
DAN GALLAGHER

The older brother of Chelsea starlet Conor, Dan Gallagher joined AFC Wimbledon at the age of ten and went on to make his first team debut for the club as a substitute in April 2015, two months after signing his first professional contract. A brief loan spell away saw him gain experience at Kingstonian before joining Isthmian League side Leatherhead following his release from Wimbledon. He would make nearly 100 appearances for the Tanners, and later made the switch to neighbours Dorking Wanderers, with whom he helped gain promotion to the National League for the first time with 34 appearances during 2021/22.

“THE PLAYMAKER”
ALFIE RUTHERFORD

After beginning his career in the Portsmouth academy, Alfie Rutherford was denied a scholarship at Fratton Park due to a heart condition with a two-year scholarship being withdrawn. Despite being advised to quit the sport, the forward returned to Moneyfields – where he had briefly played at youth level – and made his competitive debut at the age of 16, with the goals soon flowing for Moneys along with Bognor Regis and Havant & Waterlooville, following a brief loan spell at Eastbourne. The 24-year old would make the switch to National League South side Dorking Wanderers in 2020, firing the club to promotion via the play-offs as the division’s top scorer, with his 30 goals helping them secure a second place finish.

“THE FINISHER”
JAMES MCSHANE

After spending time with a number of Scottish teams as a youngster including the Shire Under-20’s, a move to Staines Town preceded a switch to Combined Counties League side Molesey where he would make a name for himself. Brief spells away from the Moles saw him turn out for Chipstead, Egham, Clyde, East Stirlingshire, Walton Casuals and Walton & Hersham, but he would go on to rack up nearly 250 appearances and 100 goals for the Surrey-based outfit. He is regarded as one the club’s greatest ever players thanks to his skill, work rate and eye for goal, and his form saw him picked up by Dorking Wanderers in 2016 where he has remained ever since.
