Boreham Wood Football Club can announce we have chosen our final home league game of the season against Sutton United as our designated fixture to raise charitable funds for one of Borehamwood’s longest running youth clubs, the beloved Brookside Boys Club.
Though this will undoubtedly be one of the most important league games in the Club’s history. It is also the perfect chance to do something good for a local charity and this match will allow us to help the coffers and profile of Brookside Boys Club.
The ‘Wood’ for the second year running have secured £2,000 from the FA, from monies raised from the Charity Shield. This was made possible, as we were one of a select number of non-league clubs in the country to reach the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup in season 2013/14.
The £2,000 donation will be made to Dick and Vera Clarke, who still after 50 years still run Brookside Boys Club, at half time with a cheque presentation on the pitch.
We will also ask everyone on the day to purchase a match day programme. All proceeds from the programme sales on the day, will also go directly to the Boys Club… There will also be other fundraising initiatives on the day, where we hope we can also raise some extra pennies.
So please do try and get down on the day to support such a good cause and who knows, you might even enjoy the very good football that is being played this season and help the clubs promotion push??
Brookside Boys Cub has over the years, provided support for thousands of Borehamwood’s youngsters. They offer an environment that takes kids off the street and gives them the opportunity to socialise and participate in team and sport surroundings…
The Boys Club produced great footballers and great football teams, as well as ABA and British Boxing Champions in its heyday… Its facility still operates with a snooker table, pool tables, table tennis, dart boards, boxing classes, circuit training sessions, indoor basketball court and an outdoor 5-a-side court, which really does give the boys an environment to grow and mix with their friends.
Wood Chairman Danny Hunter commented, “The Boys Club was a big part of my life when I was growing up. For it to still be going strong after all these years, is testament to all the volunteers who over the years have been outstanding. Two people though in Dick and Vera Clarke have been mainstays of the Club…”
Hunter continued, “To be able to help them, is in truth an honour for me and the least I can do. Their community spirit is still as strong as ever and to do what they do when in they are both in their eighties, is in truth quite staggering.”
BWFC Community Manager Charlie Hunter commented, “The support network that Brookside, Dick and Vera Clarke, as well as the other volunteers have given local boys in Borehamwood has been absolutely fantastic. As such it is only right as the Town’s senior Football Club that we help when we can, and it is so important that Dick and Vera get the recognition that their service to the Community deserves.”
Anyone who cannot attend but who wishes to make a donation no matter how small to the Brookside Boys Club, (who are a registered charity) should contact Charlie Hunter at the Club on 0208 953 5097. Please rest assured, that every penny of your money will be added to the fund and you will also be recognised and thanked by being put into the Football Club’s match day programme as a contributor for the Sutton United game.
