Boreham Wood FC would like to thank local estate agents, Oliver & Akers, for kindly sponsoring our annual pre-season friendly against an Arsenal XI taking place this evening.
Company Director, Vic Akers OBE, will be a name well-known to fans from both teams having provided Arsenal with over 30 years’ service, as well as more recently served with the Wood as their Assistant Manager during the successful 2019/20 season. Vic founded the Arsenal Ladies team and during his 22-years as Manager guided them to win every single major trophy in English women’s football; winning the FA Women’s Cup 11 times, the FA Women’s League Cup 10 times and the FA Women’s Premier League 11 times. Though, his and Arsenal Women’s greatest achievement took place here at Meadow Park winning the UEFA Women’s Cup in 2007, and they remain the only English team to achieve this accolade.
Vic went on to become the head of Arsenal’s Community Development and subsequently took the role of Club Kit Man within Arsenal’s first team set up. Vic has worked alongside some of the Gunners’ biggest ever names including Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Viera.
Vic, who has been friends with the Wood’s Chairman/Owner Danny Hunter for more than 20 years, more recently undertook a role at Boreham Wood FC in 2019, carrying out an integral role as Assistant Manager within Luke Garrard’s senior management team.
Vic who will be attending the match tonight said, “The friendly fixture between Boreham Wood and Arsenal signals for many the start of the new season. I am delighted to be able to lend my support through the sponsorship of the event by my property company, I send my best wishes to all the players taking part this evening and hope all the fans enjoy the match.”
