Boreham Wood v Notts County
Saturday 13th August 2022, 3.00pm
LV BET Stadium Meadow Park, National League

THE CONTEXT

The Wood return to the LV BET Stadium Meadow Park for their first home game of the 2022/23 National League campaign, hosting last season’s play-off quarter-finalists Notts County.

The Magpies have made a positive start to the campaign after a bittersweet season last time out, and will be keen to finally get over the line to make the return to the Football League after three successive play-off attempts.

Wood will be looking for an improved performance following their opening day victory at Southend United, looking to build on the win and continue their strong start to the season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

“THE DESTROYER”
KYLE CAMERON

A Newcastle United academy graduate, Kyle Cameron joined the Magpies at the age of nine and progressed through the ranks where he debuted for the Under-18’s while still a schoolboy, before gaining senior experience on loan at Worthington, York City, Newport County and Queen of the South. A move to Torquay United saw him make 100 appearances as he helped the Gulls secure an immediate return to the National League in his first season as well as going close to promotion to League Two, before making the switch to league rivals Notts County in 2021 after three years at Plainmoor.

“THE PLAYMAKER”
RUBEN RODRIGUES

Ruben Rodrigues became the first Portuguese to play for Notts County when he swapped the Dutch second division for the National League in the summer of 2020. Having played in Holland since academy level, he enjoyed spells with Wilhelmina Boys, Gemert and Den Bosch, making his Eerste Divisie debut with the latter before a loan spell with De Treffers, prior to his move to Meadow Lane. The playmaker has provided plenty of excitement, lifting the National League Player of the Month award for May along with the Fan’s Player of the Year award, scoring 12 goals in his debut campaign.

“THE FINISHER”
MACAULEY LANGSTAFF

After impressing in the amateur game, Macauley Langstaff earned opportunities with Billingham Synthonia, Blyth Spartans, Gateshead, York City and Bradford (Park Avenue), before returning to the Gateshead International Stadium in 2020. It was his second spell on Tyneside that saw him break out, firing the Heed to the National League North title with 32 goals and 14 assists which earned him the division’s Player of the Season award. As a result of his form he moved to Notts County in the summer, scoring on his competitive debut with a brace against Maidenhead United on the opening day of the season.

LAST TIME WE MET

Notts County 1-0 Boreham Wood
Tuesday 22nd March 2022
Meadow Lane, National League

An early goal from Matt Palmer was enough to stretch the Wood’s winless run to six games in all competitions against Notts County.

The hosts will have been disappointed to not take the lead when Jayden Richardson was forced wide after rounding Taye Ashby-Hammond, but their frustration would last just a couple of minutes as his low cross caused havoc in the area, with the ball falling kindly to Palmer to strike home after Dion Kelly-Evans’ initial effort. County would dominate much of the first half as a result, with Ashby-Hammond pulling off two wonderful saves to deny Ruben Rodrigues and Kelly-Evans and keep the score down.

The Wood did begin to grow into it towards the end of the first half as Danilo Orsi and Tyrone Marsh tested Sam Slocombe, and they would go close to finding an equaliser in fortuitous circumstances when the County keeper spilt Dennon Lewis’ cross, subsequently requiring a last-ditch clearance. Further opportunities for Harry Arter, Frank Vincent and Alex Lacey all went amiss before Jamal Fyfield struck a volley over the bar, with Ashby-Hammond once again called into action late on to deny Rodrigues’ drive. Josh Rees had the visitors’ best chance of the evening when well-placed to shoot, but his effort was tame and failed to trouble Slocombe. Ashby-Hammond would then be forced into a handful of late chances as Richardson, Palmer and Rodrigues looked to double their advantage, before the referee brought a close to proceedings.
