Tomorrow, Luke Garrard’s men travel to Hampshire for our Isuzu FA Trophy Round of 16 fixture away to Vanarama National League side Aldershot Town, kicking off at 15:00.
Last season for the Shots
It was heartbreak for Aldershot as they just fell short of qualifying for the Vanarama National League play-offs, finishing only two points behind seventh-placed FC Halifax Town. Although the Shots will no doubt have felt disappointed to miss out on the playoffs, it was the club’s highest league finish since the 2017/18 season. In addition, the club also enjoyed an impressive Emirates FA Cup run, terminating at in the Third Round Proper against West Bromwich Albion.
Form Guide
Although the Shots will be disappointed with their current standings in the Vanarama National League, they have proved to be a hard team to beat in recent times, as they are currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak in all competitions. This run has included only two wins, however, with the Shots sharing the points on five occasions. After draws against Forest Green Rovers, local rivals Woking, and Sutton United, Aldershot faced Chertsey Town at home in the Isuzu FA Trophy Fourth Round in which they recorded their biggest win of the season, defeating the Curfews 8-0.
Goals from Christian Maghoma, James Henry, and Ryan Jones gave the Shots a comfortable half-time lead with a hattrick from Kai Corbett and a brace from Jonny Stuttle in the second half earning the Shots tomorrow’s tie. Two draws and one win followed, with the Shots’ first league win since November coming away at promotion-chasing Oldham Athletic. A hattrick from Joshua Barrett helped the Shots to a 3-1 win at Boundary Park.
Last time we met
In April of last year, Luke Garrard’s men triumphed 3-0 over the Shots in a dominant away performance. Lee Ndlovu opened the scoring on 10 minutes with a fine run and shot and Erico Sousa added another from 12 yards shortly after. Despite Aldershot’s attempts, including a late chance for Jack Barham, Wood’s defence remained resolute. Kabongo Tshimanga sealed the victory with a close-range strike on 67 minutes.
One to watch
EFL veteran, James Henry will be one for the Wood to look out for tomorrow afternoon. Since arriving at the EBB Stadium in the summer from Oxford United, Henry has been the star man for the Shots from midfield, with 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions this season.
The Wood
After an impressive run of just one loss in 15 matches across all competitions, Luke Garrard’s men have now lost their last two outings, coming against Chippenham Town and Worthing. The first of these losses was a 4-1 defeat at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium Meadow Park with the Bluebirds taking the lead in the 16th minute through Thomas Mehew. His initial shot was strongly parried by Wood goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore, however, Mehew would convert from the rebound. Although the Wood swiftly replied with a Jayden Richardson equaliser, the away side ran away with the scoreline courtesy of a brace from Luke Spokes and a stoppage-time goal from Caine Bradbury.
We would then fail to get back to winning ways at fellow promotion chasers, Worthing. Kwesi Appiah gave Luke Garrard’s side the lead after nine minutes with a great strike in the box, however, the momentum soon shifted after the 31st minute, as Chris Bush was shown red following a collision that sent the Rebels’ Mo Faal into the advertisement boards. Although the Wood held onto their lead going into the half-time interval, constant pressure from Worthing earned them the three points with second-half goals from Joel Colbran and Ricardo Carvalho.
