Wood’s Under 18’s eased into the First Round of the FA Youth Cup, after defeating Great Wakering Rovers 2-1.

The score line made the game look closer than it was, as the Wood could have been out of sight had they taken the numerous chances they created.

As early as the fifth minute, Alfie Barker was sent through one on one, forcing a good save from the keeper.

Wood’s first goal was a well worked move, playing the ball across the midfield, the ball was sent out wide, in came the cross and Alfie Barker (pictured) got his head to the ball which was well directed over the keeper to give the Wood a well deserved lead.

A long free kick into the Great Wakering box wasn’t cleared by the visiting defence, allowing Alfie Barker to smash the loose ball past the keeper into the net for his second and Wood’s second of the evening.

Numerous chances came and went for the Wood to put the tie to bed. A defensive lapse in concentration allowed Great Wakering back into the game in the 80th minute as they pulled a goal back, however the young Wood side held firm to book their place in the first round proper against Barnet FC.

Full details of the game against Barnet will be advised once known.
