It is with great sadness that Boreham Wood Football Club have recently learned that one of its former goalkeepers and such a Club stalwart has passed away, after a long illness, at the age of sixty-two.

Steve Waller (left, holding skipper John Sneddon aloft) was a legendary goalkeeper during his fourteen seasons with the Club. Steve began his career as a Junior at Arsenal and then at Brighton & Hove Albion. He then played for Hastings before joining Byng Road Old Boys from whom he joined Boreham Wood F.C. In an era of great success, Steve was a hugely popular figure with both players and supporters alike.

Steve made his First Team debut for Boreham Wood against Maidenhead United (Away) on the 16th March 1971 in the Athenian Football League and went on to complete 575 First Team appearances, he played his last game for the Club, a 4 – 0 victory, at home to Windsor & Eton on the 28th April 1984 in the Isthmian Football League.

Steve won the Club’s “Player of the Year” award on three different occasions in 1972/73, 1974/75 and in 1978/79.

After leaving Boreham Wood, Steve played a few games for Enfield F.C. and finished his career playing for Barnet F.C.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
