This Monday evening sees the visit of our rivals from the past three seasons for our final friendly match prior to life in The National League.

United have struggled the past three seasons in the Conference South, the cash strapped side trying desperately to finish off the redevelopment of their revamped facilities at The Warren, whilst running a First Team that is capable of projecting them back to the highs of the three seasons they previously spent in the then Conference Premier Division.

There is renewed hope this campaign however and our visitors have strengthened with some notable signings. One familiar face to Wood fans will be Michael Thalassitis, a player who featured on loan at Meadow Park and one that the club were at the time interested on signing. Michael now joins up with his new Manager Tristan Lewis after being released from Stevenage.

He is joined by the highly rated 22 year old defender Max Worsfold who continues his career at National League South level after joining from relegated Staines Town, where he was entrusted with the Captains armband.

Yado Mambo a towering central defender joins from Chelmsford City, whilst Fulham keeper Magnus Norman had been signed on a season long loan.

Norman featured in a recent disappointing 3-1 defeat to Beaconsfield SYCOB. United will face Dulwich Hamlet on their 3G surface at The Warren this coming Saturday.

Last season we enjoyed two 3-0 victories against our visitors en route to promotion, with United finishing one place above the drop zone. The previous season we suffered two defeats against the side that were reprieved from relegation at the end of that season.

Wood Manager Ian Allinson explained the importance of this hastily arranged fixture.

“ We lost out when the Arsenal game was called off and it is vital that we got another game in prior to the start of the season. Whilst it is not ideal playing just five days before the start of the season we need to get minutes on the field into the players so we are up to speed. Also we had four new players through the middle of the park on Tuesday night against Ebbsfleet. It was the first time they have played together and it is vital that with the game at Biggleswade Town on Saturday and then at home to Hayes and Yeading United on Monday we continue to develop the understanding that the players have with each other.”

On the 3-0 win against Ebbsfleet United Ian added, “ It was a very pleasing performance especially in the second half when we passed the ball extremely well. It was a serious game and that was exactly what we needed!”

Adult and OAP Season Ticket holders are reminded that following the cancellation of the Arsenal XI fixture, this fixture will now entitle you to  “FREE” entry. We hope to see as many people as possible on Monday as the excitement builds towards our opening day fixture.
