Boreham Wood are delighted to announce that Club Captain David Stephens, has signed a new two-year contract with the Wood, that takes him through to the end of the 2019/20 season.

Stephens first joined Boreham Wood in October 2015, and went on to make his debut in a 2–1 victory over AFC Hornchurch in the FA Cup.

Since his debut, the ever dependable and talented centre-half, has become a real fans-favourite at Meadow Park, and was rewarded with the Club Captaincy earlier in the summer.

The new contract is seen as yet another sign of the progression that the club and it’s infrastructure are making. And, with Stephens delighted to have nailed his colours to our mast, the future for both the player and the club look bright.

On the new deal, Stephens commented: “The club have looked after me a lot, since I have joined, I think that my performances have gotten better and better and I have been rewarded with a two-year contract and I am really happy with that.

“I just really like what the club are trying to do, the vision and how they are going forward.

“I get on with everyone around the place, the staff, the players and it is just an excellent place to be at the moment.”

The 26-year-old began his career in the academy at Norwich, making his debut in a 1-0 win over Gillingham, in 2009.

Stephens departed the Canaries in 2010, to sign for Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, before a move to Barnet two years later.

Stephens became a regular for the Bees, at the heart of their defence and he was twice voted as Barnet’s Player of the Season, by supporters, in 2012/13 and in 2013/14.

Stephens has gone to make over 50 appearances for the Wood and is a mainstay of Luke Garrard’s defence, which conceded just one league goal throughout the whole of November.

Asked what he believes has endeared him to supporters, he explained: “One fan said to me the other day, that he doesn’t really notice when I am playing, but he notices when I’m not, so maybe that speaks for itself.

“I give my all in every game and hopefully they see that. I try and be a leader on the pitch and that is the main thing.”

Having committed to the Wood for the future, Stephens has big dreams for the side: “Ideally, I would like us to get promotion.

“I think that with the group of lads that we have got at the moment, if ever there was ever a time, I think that it is now, and I think that everyone realises that, so first and foremost, that would be it.”
