ENGLAND VICTORIOUS

On Monday two of ‘Wood’s’ promising youngsters, Charlie Hunter and Ruddock Yala, once again played for The English College’s, this time against their Welsh College counterparts at the brand new Bangor City Stadium.

Both Charlie and Ruddock started in a 1-0 win over The Welsh College’s and both gave impressive performances, which culminated with England getting an 80th minute winner.

Both boys will now return to club duties, and will be a part of the squad that will take on Lincoln in theQuarter Finals of this year’s ECFA National Cup this Thursday. It’s a cup that both players helped ‘Wood’s’ Under 19’s win last year and we hope can retain again this year.

Boreham Wood’s Head PASE Academy coach, Luke Garrard, said “The boys have shown the right Attitude, Discipline and Desire all season and now are starting to get their rewards. The season is building nicely and we have a huge next few weeks ahead with two National Cup Quarter Finals.”

RESERVE MATCH REVIEW – AFC WIMBLEDON

Boreham Wood Reserves V AFC Wimbledon Reserves
Suburban Reserve Premier Division
Saturday 3rd March 2012 – Kick off 3.00pm

This Saturday, 3rd March 2012 Boreham Wood’s youthful reserve side host AFC Wimbledon at home in the Premier Division of the Suburban Reserve League, Kick off 3.00pm.

‘The Wombles’ currently sit top of the division having won 9, drawn 4 and lost 4 from their 17 league games so far, recording 31 points, whilst conceding only 16 goals and scoring 39. Giving them the most prolific strike force and best defensive record in the league at this present moment, so it sure to be ‘Wood’s’ toughest test so far.

The game will be played within the Stadium at Meadow Park, rather than the adjacent 3G Astroturf with admission at £4 for adults and £2 for children.

C’mon ‘The Wood’!

Frannie Foils Classy Wood

Tonbridge Angels    1    Boreham Wood    1

An injury time equaliser left Wood to reflect on the chances they squandered to post a second successive win on the road.   Leading from the ninth minute Ian Allinson’s men were foiled by the League’s leading goal scorer Frannie Collin who came off the bench to hit his twenty-second League goal of the Season in the ninety-second minute.

Mauro Vilhete made his first start for Wood in place of David Hutton in the only change from the team that posted a 0 – 3 victory at Maidenhead United two days earlier.    The game was played at a frenetic pace with Wood quick to the ball and lightning fast on the attack.

Sam Cox controlled the game with a dogged midfield performance which restricted The Angels to playing the long ball into danger.    Daniel Brathwaite thwarted any threat down the right, whilst Charlie O’Loughlin was again robust in the heart of the defence.

Omer Riza saw any early chance cleared off the line by a defender, before Angels Danny Walder struck a free kick just over the Wood crossbar.    A long ball from Osei Sankofa down the right caused the Angels defence problems.    Ben Judge over hit his back pass to ‘keeper Lee Worgan who fluffed his clearance with his weaker left foot, the ball rolling into the path of David Bryant who accepted his gift with aplomb after nine minutes.

A mistake by Omar Beckles allowed Jon Main in on goal but Luke Garrard was on hand to make the important tackle.    Wood should have scored after nineteen minutes.     A quickly taken free kick gave Mario Noto space down the right and his fine cross was met by the unmarked Bryant at the far post. He headed downwards with the goal gaping and his effort bounced over the crossbar.    Riza again showed he is a quality signing with superb footwork, his presence in attack changing the shape of the whole team for the good.

Rory Hill broke well for The Angels down the left squaring for Chris Piper but he got under his shot and skied his effort.    A fine move from Wood followed, involving Riza, Cox and Noto who provided for Brathwaite to cross from the left.    Garrard headed down for Riza who shot just over the crossbar.

Joe Benjamin then shot just over for the home side before Riza blasted another effort over the bar.

The second half continued in an end to end fashion.    Hill’s cross cum shot was held by Elvijs Putnins, with Wood responding with shots from Vilhete and Cox, both held by Worgan.

Collin replaced Main after sixty-three minutes but the next chance fell to Riza who curled his shot wide after good work from Noto.    Noto himself then turned and shot just wide on the edge of the area.

An aerial bombardment of the Wood penalty area broke out with Collin always the target. Walder managed a rare shot on target which Putnins was equal to, then the Wood ‘keeper showed great alertness to gather a fierce header from Sonny Miles.

Sam Lechmere replaced Vilhete and again showed his threat from crosses after contributing the ball for Wood’s third on Saturday.    He picked out Riza who had lost his marker, yet his header came off the top of the crossbar and Angels were still in it.

Then came the coup de grace.    Miles slipped Collin through down the right and he fired low into the bottom left hand corner to secure a point for the home side.

Team:    Putnins, Sankofa, Brathwaite, Cox, O’Loughlin, Beckles, Noto, Garrard, Bryant, Riza (Sub – Lobjoit 90 mins.), Vilhete (Sub – Lechmere 85 mins.).

Subs (Not used):    Hutton, Jones, Jordan.

Goals:    Tonbridge Angels:    Collin 90(+2).            Boreham Wood:    Bryant 9.

Man of the Match:    Sam Cox.

Magpies Topped By A Slice Of Omer!

Blue Square Bet South

Maidenhead United    0    Boreham Wood    3

by John Mead

A wonder goal from debutante Omer Riza, a brilliant team goal and a dubious offside goal left The Magpies with nothing to show for their efforts against Wood.

Riza, who boasts a Career that started at Arsenal as a teenager, before starring for Trabsonspor in the Turkish Super Lig is Ian Allinson’s latest addition to the side and the thirty-two year old made an immediate impact.

This was Wood’s best away result of the Season against a battling strong Magpies side. Their lack of dominance came about thanks to a quite superb battling performance from Luke Garrard who was in a class of his own, coupled with the resolute Elvijs Putnins in goal. One only has to look at this Season’s match statistics.    In thirteen appearances he has tasted defeat just three times.

A nervy start produced few goal scoring chances, with Maidenhead’s Leon Solomon coming close with a rising drive that went just over the bar.    Charlie O’Loughlin battled against the equally well framed centre forward Alex Wall throughout, unfortunately picking up his tenth booking early on which will lead to a two match suspension.

David Bryant hit a weak shot at Aaron Lennox, before opening the scoring after twenty-three minutes.    A chipped ball over the defence was helped on into the path of Bryant by Riza and with the entire Magpies back line looking to the Referee he volleyed home wide of Lennox with no flag offered by the Assistant Referee.

The collective bemusement to that goal turned to collective admiration to Wood’s second three minutes later. An interchange of passes between Mario Noto and David Hutton out on the right led to a perfectly threaded low ball across goal from the Wood Captain finding Riza just inside the penalty area wide on the left.    With seemingly nothing on he took a touch before executing the most sumptious curling ball into the top right hand corner of the net with almost no back lift whatsoever.    It drew gasps of admiration from home and away Supporters alike.

The home side were suitably contained by Garrard and his men up until the interval when Wall almost skewed a clearance into his own goal, which would have ended the game as a contest.

Wood continued to dominate after the interval with Lennox forced to save from Bryant and then Hutton after he was played in by Riza.    Riza continued to shine when Noto played him through between two defenders.    He was strong enough to make the edge of the area where John Scarborough made a fine saving tackle.    However the loose ball fell for Hutton whose fierce shot was well held by Lennox.

There followed period of sustained pressure from Maidenhead United as Johnson Hippolyte rang the changes using up all his options from the bench.    Leigh Henry headed just wide at the near post from a corner, before great defensive work from Daniel Brathwaite and Garrard prevented further work for Putnins.    Jermaine Hinds found himself in acres of space at the far post from a corner yet took an age and fired wide.    Wall tried his luck from thirty five yards but Putnins remained as reliable as ever.    O’Loughlin then committed a clumsy challenge which Referee Mr. Knight took an age to deliberate over, due to the mob protest from a number of animated Magpies.    It was their boisterousness which probably saved O’Loughlin at the outset.

Another wild miss from Hinds signalled the end of the home side’s chances.    Wood mopped up to end the game in some style.    Osei Sankofa, winning the ball by the corner flag in his own half steered into the path of Sam Lechmere.    His long ball down the wing was brilliantly brought under control by Riza, who awaited the overlapping run of Sankofa.    He fed Bryant who switched play back wide for Lechmere to deliver a floating cross that Bryant headed down into the path of Sankofa.    The right back looked every part a forward bringing the ball down before sweeping it beyond Lennox into the corn

PASE ACADEMY UPDATE

This Monday two of ‘Wood’s’ promising young talents Charlie Hunter and Ruddock Yala travel to Bangor, Wales to play for the English College’s FA against the Welsh College’s FA.

Charlie and Ruddock both featured in the English College side that played the Welsh Schoolboys in January, and ‘Wood’s’ players gave good accounts of themselves.

The match on Monday evening is the ECFA’s last warm up game before travelling to Italy in March, to take part in a European International tournament, where the boys are likely to play against the likes of Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and of course Italy.

The youngsters join the production line of young Boreham Wood academy players who have gone on to represent England at either College or Schoolboy level. Previous players to represent their country at College or Schoolboy level include Jon Clements, Jordan Lawal, Jay Brett, Bradley Fraser and Lee Close.

‘Wood’s’ PASE Academy over the last decade has gone from strength to strength and can now boast that they have produced 100+ players who have featured at Ryman Premier level or beyond (including Pelly Ruddock who was sold to West Ham United earlier this season), 100+ players who have gone on to play in the non-league pyramid, as well as winning 2 National titles over the past 5 seasons (Our Under 19’s are reigning ECFA National Cup Champions).

Boreham Wood’s PASE Academy are currently holding trials to join their scheme for the 2012/2013 season. UNDER 19′S PROGRESS IN ECFA NATIONAL CUP

Boreham Wood Under 19’s 1 – 0 Hartpury College
ECFA National College Cup Last Sixteen
Wednesday 22nd February 2012 – Kick Off 1.00pm

On Wednesday, Boreham Wood’s talented crop of Under 19’s took on Hartpury College in The English College’s National Cup for a place in the Quarter Finals.

Hartpury College who are current ECFA league champions travelled to Meadow Park to face the reigning ECFA national cup champions, so an exciting game was in store.

It was a tense first half in which both sides struggled to play the style of football they are renowned for and the game remained 0 – 0 at the interval.

‘Wood’ started the second half much brighter and took the lead when Harvey Scott-Morris played in Dean Rubinia, who coolly lifted the ball over the Hartpury goalkeeper’s head.

Hartpury piled on the pressure with long balls, but ‘Wood’s’ centre halves Ruddock Yala and Sammy Doolan stayed resilient and gave outstanding performances. ‘Wood’ held on for a tough, hard fought victory and will face Lincoln away in the next round, date to be confirmed.

Boreham Wood’s Under 19′s have been in formidable form thus far in National competitions, reaching the quarter finals of both the ECFA national cup and Conference national cup. Comprehensively beating Cambridge United 6-0, Welling United 5-0 and Croydon Athletic 3-1. However there is still a lot to be done and the hard work really starts now.

Squad: J Wilton, L Close, L Wallace, C Hunter, R Yala, S Doolan, C Martin, M McCann, D Rubinia, H Scott-Morris, L Griffin. Subs: T Winston, R Hastings, T Mashingindze, S O’Connor, G Hunter.

Goal scorer: Dean Rubinia.
